SMOKE from under wheel arch ?

m bannon

New member
Had the car (993tt) lying up for a few months over the first part of the winter and took it out the other day for a spin, i noticed after a run that i had smoke appearing out from under the wheel arch ......not good !
Any ideas, is it condensation, oil on a heat shield ( just had an oil change b4 it was parked up)
Any pearls of wisdom would be apreciated.
ps. there is no loss in power, oil level or oil pressure.

Mark

Hi Mark-I had this it was oil in brake pads from corroded oil pipe at cooler-go out and brake hard and often eventually will be ok-you should also notice that under heavy braking car will pull to opposite side of smoking side if this is the problem.

If its not the obvious as already mentioned, oil from the oil change fill up. I had a similar problem with mine and it was the power steering pipe on top of the pump, the pipe union just needed tightening up a bit. Power steering fluid used to weep out and run down onto the heat exchanger on the drivers side. Could also be a cam cover or timing cover gasket weeping oil, both end up dripping onto the hot exhaust.

Many thanks for the replys .
It started on the rhs only , now though it seems to be on the left. , mind you it has only obout 100 miles since i noticed it.

thanks.

Just needs a few drops of oil from the cam covers to drip on to the exhaust etc. Mine did it the first two times I drove it after I purchased and since then nothing.
If it doesnt clear up very soon, I would raise in the air and whip of the engine cover/undertray( take two minutes) and see if you have few moist patches on bottom of engine and you clean the engine cover whilist your at it.
If you have the weepy cam problem and theres oil in the undertray then leave it off.

Had a similar probelm with my 993TT some time ago. Smoke from left rear wheel arch. Turned out to be a oil pipe which had corroded - common problem apparently. Would get it checked asap by dealer if I were you. Cost around £600 in the end from official porsche dealer.

regards, Sniper
