Smoke on start up

Hi all,

I sometimes notice smoke from the exhaust when starting my 993 from cold. I remember reading somewhere that this is normal but was wondering if somebody might be able to confirm that this is the case and the cause of the smoke burst.

Many thanks,
Tim

It's normal for a flat six engine. Just as long as it clears promptly on start up - more noticable if car not used for a day or so. Overfilling can make it worse.

As John says, it's normal, it's the oil seeping past the piston rings. The longer the engine's lain idle the worse it is. I notice it at its worst on a Monday morning if I've washed it on Sunday and not taken it for a run to dry it off. Presumably the cold rings allow more oil to pass by.

I think the only damage it does is to my pride if anyone's watching me disapper into a cloud of smoke as I reverse out of the garage [:D]

Shows it's a proper engine - think what a steam train looked like!

I asked this the other week to about my 911 and feel the same when i start it. Like they said tho if it clears its okay.

You should let the car idle for 20-30 seconds after a run to let most of the oil return to the oil tank. I find this stops the smoke on the next start up most of the time.

I kinda like the whole smokin' n' purring combination before the storm of taking the quick long way somewhere"¦

Generally I tend to notice the smokin' scenario following an idle week of usage and cooler temperatures"¦ Never worried about it though, the car is a living piece of machinery once I've turned that key.

...It's quite reassuring really, at least the pistons have oil in them on start-up, reducing the wear on a cold engine.

That's my (positive) take on the situation....please don't burst my bubble!!

Mine recently started doing that, but only very occasionally. According to the forums and my independent, who checked it over, it's pretty common and is made worse by overfilling or even the oil grade used. I usually run mine at just below half-full on the gauge when very hot, with 10/40.

As with all 'financial' advice, however, DYOR! It may be worth having it checked or draining a little oil out.

Cheers/John

I would drain a little out. The flat six design does encourage a little smoke on startup but usually only if left for several days unused.
