Smoke on startup turbo gen1

Hi all, I have a gen1 turbo and occasionally on startup I get a big puff of smoke, I have read around and some say it's normal. It normally happens when I have driven it a bit hard and left it over night and start the car in the morning. Then in the morning I get a big puff of smoke. The car is under warranty so will bring it up with Porsche but would like to know what member think. Surely this can't be normal and is also quite embarrassing when it happens.

 
One of the characteristics of the flat 6 Boxer engine. Small quantities of engine oil creep into the combustion chambers when the vehicle is at rest overnight. Earlier, aircooled versions were worse as engine machine tolerances were slacker.
Probably nothing to worry about, but worth mentioning to you PC anyway.

Thanks for the response Clive, I am glad you said that but was wondering if it was engine smoke or turbo smoke. Will try film it next time and post a vid.
 
Turbo is a different engine, I certainly wasn't aware of any of them suffering bore scoring.

The smoke was common place on mine and it has been mentioned a fair few times - it generally happens when people are watching!! :ROFLMAO:
 
My C4S is non-turbo and every once in a while I get smoke out the rear on start up. It's fairly high mileage at 76K but I had Cridfords do a bore scope on the engine and they said everything was perfect. The service history is good with lots of oil changes. They said the smoke was purely an accumulation of oil residue from the cylinder heads, normal wear on valve guides etc., which is immediately burnt on start up. Also the nearside exhaust pipes are always a little more discoloured. I do hope your smoke problems are not serious, I certainly have no concerns over mine.

I also had a c4s before and was unfortunate to have bore scores develope when the car and engine was immaculately kept.

I actually have it for sale now as I upgraded to a turbo, but I had hartech do a complete rebuilt of all 6 cylinder liners and new original pistons along with all the bells and whistles, cost me 11k!!

Hence my concerns
 
I wouldn’t be too concerned
I had a gen 1 turbo which did exactly the same
had engine checked, nothing wrong
like Clive said a little oil will bypass the rings when sat over night

I have just got shot of my 977 for the same reason.
I took it into Brookspeed in Eastleigh because clutch was slipping, 3 technicians agreed that not only was the clutch gone, the engine was about to go as well although it's only did 46000 miles. Apparently the 5th and 6th cylinder doesn't cool properly causing the bores to go oval. The left exhaust pipe was a little black and smoked particularly when first starting in the morning. They quoted me £20k for replacement engine.
I would ask Brookspeed for their comments and see if it differs from Porsche dealership, Brookspeed are are unbiased.
It isn't my intention to be an alarmist, I now have a 991 S
 
Hi Ferrar, Completely agree, its a massive issue with the M96 (non turbo) engines and they will all at some point suffer the same failure, no matter the mileage. Porsche should accept responsibility but that will never happen. It would be good if Porsche Club would assist in posing the concerns to Porsche and see what they say. There must be so many people that have suffered from bore scores.


 
As Gary has said, the first generation Turbos have the bullet proof Mezger engine, which didn't suffer from the bore scoring issue. I have a gen 2 Turbo, which also throws out smoke on startup from time to time. My previous C4S and Boxster both did it too. It's a characteristic of the flat six engine. I wouldn't worry at all. It's just rather embarrassing if someone's standing behind the car!

I bought a White Cab 991 S 3.0 turbo last week. Today I watched as my wife drove it out of the garage, the left tail pipe black with blue smoke. I hope this hasn't inherited a similar problem.
I will be at the meeting tonight and see if someone can advise.
