Smoke when starting up

Hi - I am new to this and so have a few questions!

My 2000 boxster S gives a good belch of blue smoke on start up. It does not do this all the time and does not appear to be using much oil (less than 1 litre in 10,000 hardish miles including some track time). It has got just approaching 40,000 on the clock. Any ideas? I am suspecting that it is only happening when it has been drven hard then turned off quickly then left to stand ie over night of all day.

Thanks

James

Shouldn' t be a problem - most Porsche engines do this - something to do with oil residue on the piston tops - the oil settles because of the flat configuration of the engine (or something like that!). My 2002 model occasionally does it - esp. after being stood for a few days. If you' re getting it on the move, I' d suggest having the car checked by an OPC or local specialist.

Completely normal for any " boxer" engine (horizontally opposed). Ask any VW owner although Subaru owners tend to swear that their cars never do it.

Many thanks - I have to say I thought the guy from the dealership was telling a load of bull when he said it was ' normal'

Right, off to the garage now for a good sniff!

yep mine does that too - only had the car 3 weeks and was going to ask the same question!

Cheers

Ant

Never seen it on the Boxster S Fairly common on old 911SC especially after long periods of standing.
