Smoke when starting up !

This is about the worst thing you can do to any car. All you are doing is covering the cat in unburned hydrocarbons and not allowing it to get hot enough to burn them off before you turn off the engine. And the engine is likely to have fuel washing oil off the bores and diluting the oil. Restarting can cause the engine management system to sense the unburnt stuff as a fault and it then shuts off the fuel entirely (I had it happen on my 986 Boxster once), preventing restart until about 12 hours later when it has all evaporated. Problem pages used to be full of people having to call out AA or RAC as a result of doing this. Later cars seem to be better at resolving this but the clouds of smoke are the result of the conditions I have described. Not a good starting regime.
 
Typical flat 6 Porsche engine behaviour. My 150k miler 964 did it, as does my 30k miler 996T! Oil can collect at the bottom of the bores, and burns off on start up. Why would you start up, turn off, and re-start 15 seconds later? Better to leave it running for that short time.
 
I almost daren't ask this question for fear of the answer but I must !

If I start the car up from cold, back it out of the garage, turn it off (say after only 15 secs of it being on), then restart a few seconds later after I have shut the garage door, I get smoke coming out of the exhaust like burnt oil or something in a pretty big cloud !

It has only happened 3 times since I have had the car but each time it has occurred if I do the above and only the above.

If I start it from cold first time and leave it running then there is absolutely no smoke at all. None ! No rattling, oil leaks on the garage floor. Nothing.

I am thinking worn piston rings or similar which is surely odd for a 27k miler ?

The oil sensor shows the oil is on the max. There is no misfiring, pinking or any other strange noise, just smooth running and all the right sounds you would expect.

This is the first car I have owned with a dry sump. Do they just not like being turned on then off so quickly when cold ?

Please dont tell me the engine is about to blow ? !!!

Anyone else experienced this ?

Phew !!! That's a relief. Thanks very much for the replies folks. I laughed when I read about it going off down the street ! Yes, that is why I did it. Most mornings I take a risk and get out the car, leave it running and dash to the garage door, slam it shut then dash back to the car ! The other morning I tweaked my hamstring - middle age really sucks sometimes ! Porsche kindly gave me 3 years free gap insurance but were at pains to point out that it is null and void if I leave the key in the car and someone drives off ! The solution from now on will be some gentle warm up stretching exercises for my tight hamstrings before I get the car out, coupled with a strategically placed cricket bat just inside the garage in case I need to smash the side window and grab the little scrote who is trying to make off with my car. Fortunately I live in a decent area but I dont even trust the post girl around my car when the engine is running and I'm not locked inside ! Porsche ownership is a whole new fun (and sometimes terrifying) experience for me ! Cheers
