smoke

Does anyone get a cloud of smoke from their exhaust upon starting the car up?
My car is a 3 years old X50TT and does this from time to time, causing major embarrassment when it gases those standing close by who must think it is an old banger. It then clears immediately. My OPC assures me they all do it and that the flat 6 engine design coupled with thin mobil 1oil leaves an oil residue on the pistons that it then burns off. However neither of my previous 996 C4's ever did it and I haven't noticed any others doing it. Oil consumption seams acceptable at about 2500 miles per litre.

I will cheer you up and alleviate some of the embarassment by saying that mine (2003 Revo TT) does it every now and then. The odd time cold but the last 2 times was after the car had only been left for an hour or so - once in the underground car park at work and the other time leaving the gym so neither great for the image of a supercar!

Hello my 930 does if I do not use it for a while but after a few miles if that even it goes.As far as I know many 911 do it on start up ?.Something to do with oil after the engine has stopped.

This is a characteristic of the Boxer engine layout. If a piston is on the induction stroke when it comes to rest, the pressure in it's cylinder will equalise by sucking air past
the piston rings. This can bring a small amount if oil with it which is what gets burnt off when you start up.
Nothing to worry about as long as it only lasts a short duration.

I also get the smoke on starting up - thanks for posting the question, it's put my mind at rest as well.

Another part of the solution is to fit a Tubi, then you're enjoying the sound so much that you don't care about the smoke (especially on cold mornings)

Cheers

I don't want to be argumentative but when a four-stroke engine is on the induction stroke, regardless of it's configuration, the inlet valve is open so there is no vacuum to suck anything past the piston rings.
I am informed that (not sure about the water pumpers) if you have lots of smoke on start up then you have a leaky turbo or shot valve seals. See Ya, if your smoke issue only goes after you have driven a mile or so then you have quite a serious leak! If it's the turbo then you will find oil in the pipe from your turbo to your intercooler, if not then it's probably your valve seals, or more seriously very worn rings which would show up on a leak down, but you've had one of these done recently right?

Hello yes the car had a top end done 17k miles ago ?. which pipe are you on about checking .Have you got a picture so I know what to look for when I check ?.I am sure the car is ok runs like a dream, I started it up yesterday first time since Sunday it was fine no smoke at all and give it a few rev's as well?.

If it's not smoking then your obviously fine, but if your getting lots of smoke on start up then check for oil in the pipe from your turbo (cold side) to your intercooler, it's the big one on the bottom left-hand side shown here

I have the 964 one so no point showing a picture of that, there will be a light film of oil in there anyway but you're looking for excessive amounts, start by making sure your oil level is correct, then leave it until it's cold, disconect the pipe from the intercooler and put a cloth over the end, start the engine for a minute and check the cloth for oil.
As i said earlier though if it isn't smoking and your oil level is good then no need to worry, your earlier post sounded like it was smoking quite bad
