Just bought the high mileage car I asked about, absolutely love it!!

Only issue (So far!) when changing gears and you let go of the gas, I get quite a lot of greyish/white smoke out the exhaust??

Pulls well and handles superbly, got the week off to play! So I am going to drain oil tomorrow and replace, what is the best oil?

Well done and welcome!

I'm going for Castrol Edge Sport 10W 60 fully synthetic in my '91 turbo (134000 miles) when I change it this week - not cheap but peace of mind never is![:D]
 
That sounds worrying, white smoke could mean head gasket. (Get a garage to do a "sniff test") if the smoke is grey blue, then could be burning oil. either way, I hope you are good at stripping down engines!
 
Does the smoke go away when the engine is warmed up?

Also what model is it? Lux/S2/Turbo?

Nick - 10W60 sounds like pretty thick oil. I use 10W40, and thought this was on the thicker end of the scale ... do you need something this gloopy?

it's not gloopy at all surprisingly - that's why it's so expensive compared to Magnatech etc. The 10 bit is the same as Magnatech etc for the cold starting (but not so thin that it leaks out everywhere!) but the 60 part gives you added protection at the hotter end of the scale!

My local specialist recommends this or Mobil 1 10w 50 for older turbo cars.

Good point - the 60 refers to the hot viscosity, so it shouldn't be too bad when cold - no worse than any other 10W oil.

Must be a smidge pricey tho' ...

I know, I know....[8|]

Just wanted to stick something in it that would see me through my Le Mans trip and the added stresses of the heat and long trip![:D] Will only have done around 2000 miles by the time Le Mans comes round.

Well that's how I've justified it to myself anyway...[8D]

 
Thanks all for your responses, my car is just a 1986 Lux.

Taking it in to the garage at the end of the week, if the sniff test is checking the radiator expansion tank for a smell of fuel, then there is no smell in there!

Someone has mentioned valve guides, and fuel getting by there??
 
Sniff test is a solution through which bubbles of air are sucked up from the coolant expansion tank- its a test for head gasket failure.

It would be oil getting past valve guides, not petrol to cause smoke. If your valve guides need replacing that is going to be expensive, as a head gasket, either are prefarable to a full engine rebuild if its worn piston rings.

Best to buy a 944 that doesnt smoke.
 
Puff of white smoke when you take your foot off the accelerator is usually valve seals.
If the smoke increases going up hill when the engine is labouring then its probably rings.
Worn valve seals is not drastic and is probably caused by worn valve guides. You could use it for years without problems but it will cost a lot in oil and if you run low on oil it will be expensive.
If its that bad your exhaust will spit oil, do not mistake with the usual carbon and condensation mix you get every morning.

if your head gasket has failed you would certainly notice an increase in coolant temperature.It would probably hover around the half way mark on the guage frequently rising quickly to near the red before the fans cut in and bring it down again. If the temperature is stable at around the first mark or just above your head gasket is probably fine.
You would also get loads of white smoke on starting from cold if the head gasket had gone . It would be like a fog out the back when the engine was cold.


You would also notice gurling in the heater pipes under the dash where the pressure of the hot combustion gases force their way into the coolant system over-pressurizing the coolant
If the engine is high mileage then its probably a combination of worn rings and valves and valve guides. Just drive it with consideration for its 22 year age and it will be fine. Boot it to spin the wheels and thrash it up to 5.5 to 6.0 rpm and something will go bang sooner than later.[8|]
 
Thanks all of you for the information.

It doesn't smoke on start up, I think from all your info then valve seals sounds the most likely!! I got the car cheap!! so i know I will have some money to spend!! Absolutely love it though!!

I hope its not a serious problem! Try a decent motorway run and see if that helps. Ditto redex in the combustion chambers and even run with a flushing oil in the sump for 10 miles.

We can hope the rings have gone sticky and these measures will free them up and stop the smoke.
