I have just got a 2001 Boxster S (picked it up friday), and have never own a Porsche before. when i start the car after 24-48hrs i get a puff of blue smoke some times it is a bit more than a puff. the car has done 56K and i have nearly all the MOTs so i think the milage is genuine.

is this normal? when i had a test drive the car was cold and did not do this. I am a bit worried.

Perfectly normal, the car has a Boxer engine, cylinders are horizontal, three to the left and three to the right, when switching off oil returns to the sump, as it drips down some oil drips into the bores behind the pistons, these drips make their way to the back of the piston and when the engine cools the metals all contract and leave a greater tolerance - a tiny bit of oil can get by the rings - which gets burnt on the next start up, The smallest drop of oil produces quite a lot of smoke.
If your car is parked on an incline - to the left or right - like the natural camber of a road towards the kerb this can increase the drips of oil going into the bores, flat level ground minimises the effect as does parking on an incline that's front to rear.

But, its all perfectly normal - but so embarrassing when you start up with such a prestige marque.

Go enjoy the car
