Smoking Cabin!

Hi All,

Having recently returned to my 993 having not driven it for 5 weeks, the battery was flat. After jump starting it and giving it a run it seemed to start okay this morning.
Halfway down the road, however, there was a burning smell and smoke started to flow in through what seemed the heating system and filled the cabin.
Of course I pulled over immediately and then later drove it back home without any problem apart from the ABS and a couple of other lights on the dash are now permanently on. Initially I thought this may be a fuse but now not so sure.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Hi

This happened to me one day a few months ago - loads of smoke and very alarming even though it only lasted a few seconds. It eventually turned out to be a wiring problem where a head unit I had had "professionally" fitted had shorted out some wires that were not properly insulated.

At the time I was also advised on here that it might be the aircon sensor in the dash giving up. That seemed to be OK so we looked elsewhere.

Hope you find it easily.

Cheers, Craig

Thank you both for your comments. Just to clarify, regrettably my technical know how is almost non existent! Having said that the burning seemed more electrical especially as some of the warning lights won't go out on the display.
Yes the wiring loom recall was done by Porsche albeit I never received any paperwork to confirm the work when I asked for it.
Maurice - you talk about add ons - by this do you mean trackers and such like?

I am somewhat wary about booking it in yet as the funds aren't there to pay for what will likely turn out to be expensive.

Your comments are appreciated.

Just to support Maurice' s comment.

The Heat exchanger exterior has a dished profile positioned under the Cam/rocker covers. Any oil leak seep or weep will collect and of course burn off with a resulting smell when the engine is run. This smell permiates through into the hot air duct and into the cabin.

I have had a similar experience with my own car, it's not so easy to say defiinite burnt oil smelll.

I have replaced both upper and lower cam cover gaskets if you need help please ask.

REGARDS John Burton

Thanks for your message John, however, this would not explain the ABS and other warning lights on the display staying on? On this basis would you not agree it must be electrical?
