smoking engine

Hi
Recently bought a 2000, 996 Carrera 2, 3.4, which had been standing for about a year, gave it a service, ran lovely for approx. 4 weeks then suddenly, on start up, began smoking, then cleared (like valve stem rubbers) got worse over the next few weeks & started smoking when hot through left hand exhaust, car ran rough, pumping oil out of exhaust, took off oil filler cap to see if blowing out (rings or pistons) but it actually had a vacuum which when released made it smoke even worse, you can hear it sucking in! - never heard of a vacuum being created before - any ideas before I take the engine out & strip it?
Thanks Chris

Ditto - especially if the smoke is white and feels really oily to the touch. The AOS is located on the top of the engine at the back of the engine compartment. The workshop manual says you have to take the engine out (or engine and transmission if it's a tip). However, I have seen a post on www.renntech.org by PiG (Paul Mabley of Tipsec) who explained how to do it without taking the engine out.

It's worth mentioning that Paul's has broken again after less than 2 years, so maybe repairing with the engine in situ isn't condusive to a lasting fix

I too suspect broken oil separator - an OPC took the engine out to replace mine when it displayed similar symptoms. Not sure about a lasting fix though - mine needed a new engine 12 months later!
