Smoking exhaust...?

Hi all,

I had a worrying moment recently, stuck in traffic on a warmish day, in my 1995 C2 (non VR), the temparature rose to about 8pm position (so nothing to worry about)... BUT i did notice that there was light smoke coming from the exhaust area on the driver's side (not kerb side though), and this smelled of oil.

Anyone else ever had this problem? Or indeed, IS it a problem?

Should I get this checked out as a precaution?

Thank you, and any ideas or thoughts are welcomed!

Probbably just cam covers.......cost about £12.00 each.......do both sides.......can be a bit tricky to get to all bolts/allen keys !!!!

Was the smoke from the exhaust pipe itself or from under the car around the exhaust boxes? If it's from the pipe I would have it looked at, however if its from the back of the car you probably have a small leak maybe from the rocker covers. The latter is nothing major and can wait till the next service. A torch over the top of the wheel may help.

I have had an issue with cam covers leaking, smoke came out of the arches on mine until it had all burnt off. Gaskets were pretty easy to replace, make sure you buy new bolts and replace and don't over torque or the covers can crack.
But also i have seen smoke from the left hand pipe after engine start and last for a couple of seconds, this has done it twice in 6 months. So i would also be intersted if you have the same issue. Was thinking it maybe Valve stem seals seeping as the car does not get used much in the winter.

Cheers

Thank you all for the quick response. The smoke comes from around the exhaust, not the pipe itself, so maybe it is leaking oil (?). In any cas i shall mention it on the car annual service/Mot next in July

Cheers
