smoking start

my 997 turbo occasionally emits white smoke from its exhausts on start up. I haven't been able to identify what conditions cause it to do this, as it happens rarely. The car is under warrantee. My OPC has had a look and claims that this is normal behaviour and just a little unburnt fuel. Is it? Have you noticed your cars doing this?

I would like to change the exhaust to one that's more tuneful, but I'm holding off for fear of invalidating the warrantee on a car that may have an engine problem. Advice welcome.

Ian.

Hi Ian

This is normal behaviour. To get rid of this, let the car idle for a minute or so when you get home before you turn off the engine.

With regards to exhausts, I would suggest Tubi or Cargraphic. Warranty will only be affected for the exhaust itself, not the whole car. If you remap your ECU then that's a different matter.

Ian, as Alex points out they do sometimes do this- normally when people are watching!!
Mine usually does it if I have moved it on the driveway and left to stand for a short time..

Ian,

It's a charactistic of the boxer (not boxster [8|]) engine and nothing much to worry about.

All my 911's have done it for the past 30 years! [;)]

Clive

Time to order that Cargraphic exhaust system!

My medium loudness one sounds like this:

Loud version sounds like this:

thanks for those links.

My 993 has a medium Cargraphic (part CARP93ETS), which sounds great for the first 70 miles. I'm considering the standard Cargraphic for the Turbo as I want it to be bearable for long journeys. I'm sure that it will sound better than the Porsche exhaust that it came with. What do you think?

Ian.

It's dead quiet in the cabin with the windows up. Outside on the other hand you wouldn't believe how far away you can hear the car roaring from!
