Whilst out enjoying a nice drive this afternoon my wife was busy taking snaps of the countryside etc. I noticed a very unfamiliar yellow glow in the far distance that didnt blend very well with the green surroundings.... Well, needless to say I knew what was waiting ahead so slowed down to make sure I wasn't going to acrue any points on my lovely clean licence. My wife snapped the pic as we passed , the garda didnt seem too impressed judging by the look we got as we passed by

George,
I was surprised to see the garda on that road with a laser and a push bike of all things! The reason i'm thinking is due to all the road deaths here. I used to think our roads were ok (ish) but having lived in the US for the last few years now I realise our roads in Ireland are a joke. The big joke is I pay over 800 euro a year road tax

and thats for a 2.5 engine. If I were to play by the book and tell them my car has been enlarlaged to a 2.8 I'd be paying over a grand a year!

Rant over

John.

Hey I remember growing up in Ireland in the 80's. You realistically needed a 4x4 the roads where so bad. The only cars to not fall apart within 2 years where Toyota's and Merc's which is why everyone seemed to have one. Then the EU gave you guys all the money the Brits where putting into the EU to build some nice roads. Now you guys earn more money then us so you have to pay to build your own roads (or more likely pay for EU funded road building in Eastern Europe I suspect).

All my relatives in Ireland talk about how expensive motoring is over there, I can't understand why Ireland is so uniquely expensive in this regard.

Neil,
Our roads just cant cope with the volume of traffic. It's pretty much bumper to bumper for people everyday doing the work commute, I dont know how they put up with it. I'm lucky in the respect my work is at night and weekends only so I miss all that headache. The government here like to hit the motorist hard with the road tax, I wouldnt mind paying if we got good roads for money but they are terrible for the most part, yes people in Ireland are pretty well off nowadays and expensive cars are commonplace but the roads are a major weak link here - Wait till next year when the government plan to introduce private speed camera companies!

John.

I'm glad you boys pointed that out that
1. The roads are s**t and full of "Donkeys" ie people that drive at 35mph and not paying attention. This is the the main killer.
2. The VRT is an absolute joke and is illegal under the treaty of Rome. Try and VRT an S2 you wont have much out of €5k..! and for what. Filling the govt. coffers
3 The road tax is a scandal and is only filling the govt coffers/ in the UK its £170 odd no matter what it is....
4. the Garda are targeting Dual Carraigeways with speedtraps "to fill the govt. coffers... I dont know why that wee Garda was out there in Wicklow. He has no way of pursuing a speeding car.... Again a Joke.....[]

Having a bad day so rant over[&:]

It's actually a little bit more than £170 in the UK now; up to £205 I think, and it is banded though if anybody honestly lets the difference of t most between £90 and £205 a year on something they will keep for an average of less than 3 years colour what car they buy then they should have their license torn up. I do however know people are that stupid...

£180 last week for an '89 S2 ...

(Which is daylight robbery, but if it was made after 2005 - I think - it would be over £400 next year.)

Oli.

Oli - If that 3 L S2 was to be here in Ireland you would be paying over a thousand euro

Count yourself lucky to be paying £180 = 270 euro approx.

Irish roads are fine.
There is some great stretches of motorway and if people took away the bendy twisty backroads then people would just compain that the character is lost.
I haven't had to use a bad road in Ireland in a few years now, expect when I go fishing.
Tax is a crime though. 1200 ish for me (euro).
Still though, there are billions worse off than me.

Have you tried the road between Bantry and Kenmare....? Its what I call entertainment......[;)]

I was a passenger in a 1990 Mini 1000 "City" in May. We were on that road at 6am on a Sunday morning en route to Galway. The car was an absolute scream. Not fast enough to attract the law but the cornering was spot on and great entertainment....! We had the road to ourselves...! The Porsche would have been too big for the tight stuff . Probably too powerful as well.[] With the Mini you hardly braked and had to keep your foot down hard. The speeds were 40-50mph but the wee car was probably on the limit......[:D]

Id love to take the Porsche down for a nice leisurely tour maybe Sept/Oct time WFP (With Fiancees Permission..!) of course...!
