Snapped fan belt thank goodness for air-cooled engines!

I was tootling down the M62 the other day when there's a load of banging coming from the boot. The fan belt light came on, so I thought, just take it slow and see how close to home I could get before it got too hot. So I kept the revs down to about 3000. The temperature went up a bit but stablised and I got home fine, Next morning, I thought itm it got me home it would get me to 9M and sure enough it did. I wouldn't have liked to have sat in a traffic jam in the current heat, but for once Warrington was empty and I got there fine.

I was surprised at that. On my old 3.2 the only notice I had that the belt had snapped was when a) the engine became uncommonly responsive and b) the temperature warning light came on..

I don;t know if you could get away with no fan belt on a water-cooled engine but I suspect not. If it wasn't for traffic jams you could probably drive around all the time at low revs without one... not that anyone would want to drive a 993 at low revs [:D]

How high did the oil temperature get on the gauge ? I am very surprised you were able to drive it without temperature becoming critical.

Since the alternator is also driven off the back of the fan, surely the ignition warning lamp must have also been displaying a malfunction?
So distance achievable without fan belt is going to be battery capacity dependant also.

No alternator light, isn't that driven off a different belt?

The temperature normally stays on the first 1/3 marking, about 8 o'clock.

The temperature stabilised around 9 o'clock on the motorway - 3,000 revs or thereabouts, 65-70 mph. In Warrington it was creeping up to 10 o'clock as it's 30mph and a few traffic lights (which weren't clogged and mercifully went green quickly)

I have a fixed-in-place RS spoiler, maybe that conducts more air in than a flip up spoiler?

I drove a 930 Turbo once with a snapped belt, and all was well at normal speeds - cruising at 60mph

Once I hit some traffic though, the temps soon climbed into the 10 O'Clock area, and we had to stop
