Snow chains - which wheels?

Chaps,

Hypothentical one.

If I was to put a pair of snow chains on my car, which wheels would I put them on? (This question is clearly posted on a 944 forum, but applies to any RWD car.)

If I put them on the rear wheels I will accelerate fine (way-hey!) but braking and cornering will be a bit of a problem. If I put them on the front then I will be able to steer reasonably well (lack of grip on the rear being something of an issue for steering) and brake well, but that will be a bit academic as I won't be able to build up any speed to need to brake (or steer) anyway.

Just curious ...

Oli.

(First person to either say "Buy four snow chains" or "leave it in the garage" will get ... ummm ... my eternal disapproval!) []

Rear, theyd be useless on the front alone.

Similarly Id only 'rope' my rear wheels if I became stuck.

100% agreement with 944man. Driven wheels.

Snowsocks are a cheaper alternative.

Get them from roofbox.com (there is a 10% discount code available - let me know if you are interested).

Tyre chains are cheaper than the mesh covers mentioned above. At least: you can buy decent tyre chains for a good deal less. Ive seen them for £20 a corner (9mm or 12mm) and you can buy a pair for a shopping car for under £30.
