SNOW on the way!

The long term wether forecast suggest this winter might be as snowy as last, which I seem to remember was rather a scary experience at times. I am therefore thinking of getting snow socks/snow chains/winter tyres from my 2009 Boxster 2.9 but what is the best option? The rear wheels are 265/40/18" and this seems to be a very difficult size to get snow socks or chains for. I like the idea of winter tyres but, quite apart from the cost, it seems, again, very difficult to get the approved "N" rating winter tyres in this size.

Someone is advertising a set of wheels for a 996 model 911 with winter tyres alreadyfitted which they claim would be fine for a Boxster, also, but the tyre size is 265/35 - would there be any problems with that?

Winter tyres will be the best option - not cheap but much more versatile. If you're fussed about N rating, talk to your OPC - some are currently contacting owners saying they can supply them.

I think they are two quite different propositions. A set of snow socks would be a great thing to have in the car in case you get caught out but a set of winter tyres would be preferable if the car is a daily driver. I bought a second hand set of rims and new N rated sottozeros for my C4S (233/35/19 front 295/30/19 rear) from Chris at Excel wheels for what I thought was as very good price. You will need to stick with N rated tyres if the car is under a Porsche warranty. You might find availability on the winters getting a bit thin now but I just ordered some for our volvo from mytyes and they should arrive at the fitting station on Tuesday. PM me if you want any more details. All the best, Andrew

I'm getting a set of 18" rims and Michelin Alpine winter tyres fitted to my Cayman just now. They had to be shipped in from Germany, but there may be a few more available. Not cheap though (£2,175)... I will report back on how well they work as the snow is still falling.
