snow & Smoke!

I am the recent owner of a 964, and I left it whilst a away for the last week. It has been snowed on and when a I thought I would start it up, it started billowing smoke from the exhaust. Is this normal?

assume it cleared when warm? If so was it not just the classic flat 6 oil seapage into cylinders whilst standing. Nothing to worry about.

If its still smokey when warm, thats different.

At this time of year mine billows out smoke on start up. It's mostly white in colour and is clearly steam based and more obvious because of it hitting cold air as it comes out of the exhaust. It soon clears after driving. Mine is more evident since a decat was fitted. I guess the big exhaust system can build up a lot of condensation and the car wants to get rid of any association with water by blowing it out [:D]

Yes, you will find that sometimes the car will smoke but this should clear within about a minute. This is a result of oil seeping into the bores after stopping the engine. This is a common occurance with boxer type engines.
After this burns off you will probably see the car start to emit alot of white smoke which is steam (very pronounced in this cold weather) as the exhaust gets hot vaporising all the condensation in the exhaust.

Thank you all that was very helpful and you were all right it is a little oil and condensation. After taking the girl out for a good old spin today the smoke cleared very quickly when warm. I am going to have to get used to having a 964

Hi All, this happened to me but the smoke came through the interior vents???? please tell me this is normal too.......it did clear after about a minute ( she had been locked away for a month ).
Also after about 40 minutes driving I parked up slight smoke was coming from the rear grill?? after a few minutes watching it died out I looked under bonnet for any obvious sign of burning but all seem well and also the was no lingering smell. Cheers

There's a good chance that the two issues are related. It sounds like you've got an oil leak on the top of the engine. This is commonly the O ring on the the oil sender or the oil breather pipe behind the air flow meter. The oil pools and then drips down on to the hot exhaust causing smoke - the smoke you saw coming from the grill. The heater blower motor draws air from the main fan and sends it into the cabin (passing through the heat exchangers along the way). So the smoke making it into the cabin is the same oil smoke or possibly you've got a torn heater hose that connects the heat exchangers to the cabin which is allowing smoke to get in (you can see these hoses either side when you remove a rear wheel).

Thanks Steve, I had a good look today found alot of power steering fluid,.........seems there is a leak somewhere from the reservoir so its dripping down onto the exhaust. I hope its just a hose I'll take it to the garage tomorrow, fingers crossed. Cheers
