So I thought my car was in mint condition...

...yes I really did. Until I noiced that everytime I demist the windows in the morning they clear up then mist up very fast straight away. This troubles me slightly, then i found the cause. I have a leak, when cornering I get wet legs and feet! Water seems to be coming in from the centre console in the footwell. I had a little poke around and got wet hands! So I thought perhaps it's the heater matrix...checked the water levels to see I had none! OOOPS! So I topped her up and gave her a 20 mile blast to see if the water level changed and it has, from Max to below Min!
Am I looking at a hefty stint in the garage for this???

PS Sorry for typing so much....
PPS How bad should I expect my fuel consumption to be, I got 270 for a full tank (£50)

Leaks in the drivers footwell are normally caused by blockages in the drainage route from the sunroof which leads to a collection area at the back of the engine bay above the steering wheel. Leaves are a common blockage.

However your coolant loss issue at the same time sounds like more than coincidence and could well be a leak from the heater matrix. Is the dampness definatley coolant and antifreeze mix or is it just plain water?

So the Collection of Water under the Bonnet (Drivers side) is Normal?
Isn't there a Drainage Point for that?

If your car is a oval dash model.. Then sorry to say,, but its a dash out job....
A real pig off a job to do...
Thats if it is your heater matrix...

You might be lucky + find its just the drain holes blocked up...

crikey hope its just a blocked drainage tube .

If you suspect the heater matrix I would be inclined to disconect the heater hoses in the engine bay and form a bypass .If the leak stops then bingo you have proof positive !
If it doesn't stop then you may have saved yourself a horrendous jo removing the dash.

First job I would do is check the windscreen seal and bulkheads and also remove all leaves and mud etc . Also open the passenger door after heavy rain and see if any water has penetrated the outer door seal and is trapped in the door cill area.

naturally check all the hoses for leaks [8|] What is the normal running temperature ? is your leccy fan working ok ?

No it's not normal - there is a big drainage hole underneath, but it is commonly blocked by leaves and mulch.

It's the same on both sides

Ok so after inspection.. All plugs an holes were clean and clear and not leaks through window seals aywhere.
The fan works fine on all three settings, it can take a while to heat up in the mornings but she is old so I'll forgive her that!
I have had to fll the water up twice in the past 2 days. That's be te big yellow tub thing at the front right head light. And I have a square dash with the madonna's bra speedo's.

You shouldn't have to fill up the coolant (almost) ever, so something is a miss.

944's warm up very very quickly, they have an oil to water heat exchanger for this very purpose, so if yours is taking a time it needs a dose of looking at.

Normally get 25mpg from a tank (400 miles), got 27mpg from the last one must be due to slowing down for the slippery roads!

I'm confused .... as far I know there is only one door seal on 944's - the outer skin of the door doesn't have a seal.

I know that when I open either of the doors on my S2 after heavy rain, there is water on the sill area, although it has never (to the best of my knowledge) leaked. (On the sill area, but outside of the seal.)

Milage - I reckon between 350 and 400 miles from a tank. Have had 445 once, but this was lots of long-distance driving. Super Unleaded improves fuel consumption as well.

Oh dear lord!!! After spending 20 min trying to get into the car after work because the locks were frozen I then spent another 20 min defrosting the whole inside then drying out the rear window!
She needs to goto the garage!!! oh well lets cancel christmas!
And now a new Fault, the cig lighter doesnt work so no more Mr TomTom. I have no idea whats wrong with it!
I think the man who sold me her is laughing right now! but still i love her and will take care of her!

Erdez,

Sounds like you have at least two problems there but address them sensibly, and you'll be fine.

Damp inside - see suggestions above.

Ciggy lighter - fuse, perhaps? Check the wiring. You'll find the problem. They aren't complicated.

As far as the frozen locks go, remote central locking is a great aftermarket addition both for the convenience and to avoid this sort of problem.

Give the leaking water a good sniff. Coolant will smell metallic and anti freeze. My old 2.5 always ran just below the min mark on the tank. I tried topping it up when I first had it and it chucked the excess it didn't want out. Ran happily for 5 years without topping up from then on staying just below min on the tank.

I was quoted 10mh to remove the dash and replace a while back when I thought there was something up with my A/C. A fair bit of labour i'm afraid. You can easily check the engine bay scuttles by pouring some water into that area to see if it drains away. Also if you suspect your heater matrix can't you just put your temp knob to fully cold that will shut off the water supply to the heater matrix to see if that stops the leaking?

My 944 has been known for this sin....... What causes it and how do you sort it ?
