So it still won't start..

I need a little help if you would. Further to my previous posts I have now refitted my recon'd starter motor and found, no change - still just a click when I turn the key. I was told that the armature was worn out hence the recon but now I'm wondering. I tested the sm as per Clarks garage in situ and it didn't seem to work.

Follow my theory if you would:
Ignition switch - if the immobiliser is armed then all the dash lights but turning the switch gives no reaction, as it should. However arming the immobilser gives said click so I figured the switch is doing something.
Starter again - well if I had not connected the wires properly or at all I would get a different symptom but I am getting the same as I have had all along so not that?

So now I am wondering about relays - it is sort of a relay type click, if a little loud. So DME? Is there a starter relay?

Some days it is a good challenge others it drives me mad. I'm convinced that if I concede and get a little man to come and sort it it will take him about 10 minutes and be really obvious but I am going to resort to that soon as I am fed up having a levitating 944 filling the garage. At least I've got other transport.

Anyway any thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers
David

Edited - is this starter likely to be the same as found on a late model (90) 944T?

By 'testing in situ' do you mean getting two mahoosive wires and powering the starter directly off the battery? If you did this and your starter still didn't work then it's dead (and you're braver than me).

Had a flick through your other thread and I assume battery is fully charged, you've checked the ignition switch etc? I have an aftermarket alarm that cuts the starter but this doesn't even make a click, not sure what the porsche one does but it might be worth bypassing it anyway (see Clarks, it's worryingly easy).

If the immobiliser can be by-passed (some can be done electronically), others will have to be done via the wiring then try that.
Are you sure that the solenoid on the starter motor is working correctly, that is the bit that will 'click'. It could be that the primary circuit (the one that is closed by the ignition key ) and makes the connection from the battery to the starter itself) is working but the current isnt getting to the starter.
Sorry if this sounds confusing, easier to do a job rather than describe it (a bit like a Haynes manual in fact!) [:)]

Cheers,

Turns out the reason it still doesn't go is my idiocy! It seems I have cracked the plastic cap on the solenoid putting it back on, hence no connection.
So back to the refurb man to fix that. Its turning out to be an expensive fix and I'm doing (and undoing) the work myself.
Ahhh!
