So many problems where do I start!

Hi there,

Firstly a thanks for the people that have responded to my previous messages, they were very helpful indeed and I now have a couple of new Contintials on the back and problem solved and of course I am waiting for the Wurth to be delivered and to get underway with my bobbly bottom investigation!

I have posted a few messages over the last couple of weeks in regards to my 88 lux and yet I still need a little advice. The other day, I was driving without music on I notice a bit of what seems to be gearbox noise, she has done 114K with a full Porsche history, however it was like a constant wirling noise when I was coasting, and when accerating, however just taping the gas and it stops. It is not loud at all, and so basically are there any products like Lucas additives that may either get rid of it or prevent a rather expensive Gearbox rebuild or has the damage already been done?

Also on the subject of additives are there any recomended for the engine, or just regular oil changes best, I use ZX1 which has no moly thingy bobs that Slick 50 has on my work car and have to say that I feel the difference and covering 71K from new has no sign of Cam wear, smoke and stills runs very well!

Kind regards as always
Chris

I had a gear box oil service and that cured the wirling groaning noise. I had it done at JZ Machtech 07000 100 911.

Many thanks I will give them a call tomorrow! I had the oil changed at the last service, but it was just changed with standard stuff and did not make a significant difference, I presume they are based near Luton?

Right off home now!

Many people haved tried Swepco gear oil from Bert Gear at www.berlyn-services.co.uk and it has quitened down a noisy box. The gear oil is supposed to be changed every 4 years or 48k miles but I do mine every 2 years because a whiney box is a bit of an achilles heel with 944s.

I often wonder if whiney boxes can't just be traced back to irregular oil changes. When I was looking for mine, I lost count of the ones I looked at that had no record of ever having the gear oil done!

Personally I would stay clear of addatives, the chemical analysis/opinions I have from an oil chemist are really quite scary. Here is what he says:

General Remarks on Chlorinated Additives.

A number of "˜add-on' additives intended to improve the performance of commercially available automotive lubricants have been marketed in recent years, under such names as "˜Xxtralube ZX-1', "˜Metol FX-1', "˜PPL Anti-Friction' and "˜Activ-8'.All such products share the following characteristics with "˜X-1R Friction Eliminator':-

1)They all contain chlorinated paraffin "˜exteme pressure'(EP) compounds first used in the 1930s in heavily-loaded industrial gearboxes, and in some automotive transmission applications, mainly hypoid gears.

2)They all corrode copper-based alloys at moderate temperatures, easily exceeded in all engine, and most transmission applications. This problem was recognised in the 1930s, and chlorinated compounds were never used in transmissions with bronze bearings or gears. No responsible manufacturer ever suggested using them in engines where their increasing activity at high temperatures could lead to piston ring corrosion and bore glazing. (For the same reason, modern "˜hypoid' additives are not used in engines, even though they are much safer than any chlorinated additive.)

3)X-1R Friction Eliminator and its clones are based upon very outdated technology, which was abandoned by responsible lubricant manufacturers for automotive transmission uses in the 1950s. Chlorinated compounds still find applications in metal working, but their use is on the decline because of health and safety considerations.

4)When burnt, chlorinated paraffins produce corrosive hydrochloric acid, and organo-chlorine compounds including the highly poisonous phosgene gas. Apart from these corrosion and health hazards, with petrol engines the deactivation of exhaust catalysts is also a problem.

5)Unfortunately, these additives give spectacular results in simple EP test machines such as the "˜Falex'. As a marketing ploy, a demonstration of this type looks impressive to those not aquainted with the above facts. Also attractive is the low cost of chlorinated compounds, allowing profits of several thousand percent to be made.

Just my 2p worth.

Cheers

Hey Simon

Many thanks for the feedback, rather shocking indeed, It does make sense what you are saying because oil manufactures would in fact already have substances like that in their oil!

So with the noisy gearbox, I have had the oil changed about two months ago with standard oil, at my local Porsche specialist, but obviously it is still a bit grooney, what oil if any would you recomend, that could help quiten it down, or am I going to have to swallow the fact that I am going to have to sink cash into either a recon box or rebuild?

Before you sink cash in I'd suggest you try this. If it doesn't work then cash is inevitable!

Many thanks Simon,

however I quote
"Many people haved tried Swepco gear oil from Bert Gear at www.berlyn-services.co.uk and it has quitened down a noisy box"

How is this different from your recomendation? Any experience with the above?

Well since you are the "Oilman" I will try your recomendation first, You certainly seem to know what you are talking about,

Thankyou for your recomendation
Kindest Regards
Chris

Thanks for the info re Silkolene gear oil...........I have just tried to buy some........virtually impossible (round and about Banbury). One m/cycle dealer I contacted who sold their products would get some in stock.......but you had to take the case load!

So.....anyone else had any luck, if not, hands up those interested and we can find out how much it costs by the case !

Just drop me an email or give me a call on 01209 215164 and I'll sort you out.
