So what did I Do wrong?

Today I lifted the head. Drained the coolant as Clarks (removing bottom hose) but when I lifted the head it still had coolant in it so it drained into the two bores at BDC and most likely going down the oil ways [:'(] I thought I didn't need to drain the block down as the water level would be below the top of the block. Did I miss something or should I have drained the block from the start?
 
I used the same method as you and got about a gallon of coolant out but still ended up with water in the bores. Presumably you are changing the oil anyway?
