So what have I let myself in for?

Hi all,

I've just bought this 1987 944 Lux for £1800 the other day. It has a full history and lots of receipts etc, and seems a very straight and sound car, but what should I get checked out first? Can anyone recommend any mechanic's or specialists in the North East (I'm in Tynemouth)? How standard does it look? I think the wheels are Design 90', should it have fuch or tele dials? The tyres are 205/55R16 front and 225/50R16 rear which seem to be the right size for 16" rims, but would I be better off with 195/65's on 15" rims (maybe a set of tele dials)? Any other tips for a 944 virgin? Any local meets around here?

It came with 7Jx15" ATS telephone dial wheels and probably 215/60/15 tyres. The D90s are brilliant quality wheels and 205/55 & 225/50 are the correct tyre size. You may well find that these were 964 wheels originally and have 6" fronts, rather than the 7"s that were fitted to 944 S2s: not ideal but theyll do and Id keep them as they are.

Is it all black inside or is it black and grey-beige?

Cheers for the wheel and tyre info Simon. The interior is black and beige with black part vinyl part velour seat (with a beige strip) and beige carpets throughout. The dash and door trims are all standard oval fair (complete with failed LCD clock!). There's even rear seat belts much to the delight of my housemates kids (well my housemates at least).

The main thing to get checked out is the belts - you may already know about this, but a quick search here will turn up plenty of info. Cam & balance shaft belts need to be changed every 3-4 years irrespective of mileage, + water pump advised every second belt change. Depending on what else neds doing - rollers, seals etc.., it can be a fairly expensive job (belts on their own is a ~£300 job). If there is no record of a recent change, then I'd advise getting them done anyway. Tom can tell you all you need to know.

I think the car looks good on D90's - slightly more modern than teledials (and Fuchs won't fit your car - wrong offset)
 
Once the belts are checked, have a good look at the cills. They are prone to rusting (but seem to rust much less on the Lux's than on the S2/Turbo's, on account of the body trim design.) If those are solid then you have a good car.

That interior looks like it isn't original. I doubt that Porsche would have supplied something with black seats and beige carpets. I happen to think it looks pretty good!

D90's are the wheel of choice.

Black seats and grey-beige carpets along with a split black over grey-beige dash was a common colourway. Grey-beige is what people mistakenly call linen on earlier series two cars: linen is much nicer when you compare them side by side and it was available on later (MY'88 onwards) cars.

Hi guys. Thanks for the feedback. I tried to check the J rating on my wheels but couldn't find it! Can I measure it with a tape measure? I'll have to get the car down to Tom Ferguson before too long and get a priority list of jobs to be done. The sills and arches are a little rusty. I think it's only surface rust (hope so anyhow) so hoping its not too hard to put straight. Other fixes I'll want to get done after any maintenance work include refurbing the wheels, getting the drivers seat seam re-stitched, replace the LCD clock, and fit my iPod stereo instead of the CD changer. I've got to get the basic's and an MOT done before spending any money on more superficial stuff.

Any North East meets?
