I drove my business partners and the cancelled order (now on GT3) I gave to my mate!

very composed, very fast, great braking...very mercedes.......I wouldn't beg one!....I don't think I actually needed to be there....and I'm now contemplating cancelling the GT3 and Turbo orders I have on anything other than £ speculation grounds ....what has the RS done to me?

please tell me i'm not going mad?

You're going mad (gone mad?)!! I drove one this weekend while in Wales and I have to say that it was terrific. It rectified a number of the grumbles I have about the 996 and felt very well put together - nicer to look at, better build and interior materials etc. Definitely evolved on the performance front too. Not suggesting I would sell my car and buy one (where is that spare £65k I left in the cookie jar ........) but a very accomplished car none the less.

A glorious sunny day in Brecon didn't hurt either. Happy days.

Carry on about these new cars and I'll have to Moderate......[]

You guys going soft?

[:D]

Mel

Yeah Mel ...you tell 'em , put 997 postings somewhere else.
Getting back to jimbers , you have to be a bit mad to have plumped for a 964RS , so no need for any further introspection on that score.
I manage to rationalise it all by keeping hold of my old 996 and the money that might have found its way to funding a part -ex for a new 997 instead funded a 964RS...LHD of course.....so the 65k total tied up in stuttgart's finest gives me a daily driver AND a widowmaker.

Over to you Des for the final word [;)]

When the last 964RS rolled off the production line it was the end od the Dr's dream never to be repeated a car that totally typified the whole philosophy of Porsche from the early fifties. Unfortunately the accountants and US Market dictate the mass market of soft cruising macho gimmick handling fly by wire modern sports cars with all creature comforts and no soul........THE END

Des did you not mean to put 993RS.?....not too much fly by wire gimmick handling,,,the clubsport versions are hardly soul less if a little noisy [:)]

Unfortunately the accountants and US Market

And legislators. They wouldn't be allowed to make them now, even if they wanted to.
(Noise limits, fuel economy, emmissions, pedestrian safety, occupant safety, etc. etc.)

40MPG? That's better than a vauxhall corsa diesal? Is it a special edition u've got Des?

Roland -you should be aware that Des never gets out of second gear, or he ends up facing the way he's come from......[;)]

Mel

As always, I admire Des's loyalty and dogma! Surely Porsche still do produce cars that are worthy of Herr Dr. The GT3 RS for instance. They may not be the same as a 964 RS but I think they are as true to the original concept as older cars.

I am sure that when the 964 came out the "Old Brigade" with their 1970's "true" Porsches would have posted (if there had only been the net then!) how soft Porsche was getting etc, etc.

As for 40 mpg, you should be ashamed of yourself [;)] I don't think I would have admitted to that. However, Mel has got it wrong. You get out of second ASAP and get it into as high a gear as possible so that the revs are low, fuel consumption is good and most important, torque is lower. If you never go above 3500 rpm you should avoid all chance of breaking traction due to the power of the car [:D]

40mpg... 40 metres per gravel trap? Could be the distance travelled between each holiday on the beach? Certainly high twenties is the best I can expect (both meanings of mpg) [:D]

fuel AND economy in the same sentence....surely a contradiction in terms! proudly I believe I could get a diesel van unladden to show less than 15mpg![8D]....so theres another challenge....who can consume a tank of fuel in the least miles in the fastest time.....christ I'll have to think about that one!

Simon clearly you and I are at an advantage cos ours are smaller!...tanks that is!

who can consume a tank of fuel in the least miles in the fastest time

Get a hire car, put it in first, leave the handbrake on, and drive on the rev limiter.
Alternatively, bang a nail through the tank and drive slowly.
