Soft brake pedal...

Drove a loan brand new Boxter S whilst my 997 was at the local OPC.

I noticed it had a rock hard brake pedal, whereas mine felt quite soft by comparison.

Pads on mine have 6-8mm remaining, discs (and car) have 12k on them and brake fluid changed per 2 yr schedule (so been in there for just over a year).

The discs are very slightly warped - notice this under very hard braking when they're seriously hot but not in normal use.

I have done an full day at the Silverstone Experience centre - is this likely to have overheated the fluid? I wouldn't have expected it to, but we did get 3 sets of 5 laps on the full GP circuit.

What do folks think?
 
I drove a brand new Boxster earlier this year, and it felt to me like it had massively (compared to a 996) over servoed brakes. Do you think that might have been it - light touch of the brakes and you got the full impact, as opposed to a more gradual braking feel requiring much more push?
 
Changed a year ago, by OPC and I seem to recall pedal felt harder than now, but not as solid as the Boxter.

Boxter over-servoed? Maybe, but it was more the hardness of the pedal - the modulation seemed fine.
 
A few people have posted that the 981 is more servo-assisted than the earlier variants. But you still should not experience any soggyness in your 997's brakes.
 
Hmm. Drove mine again today and without that experience of the Boxster would not have noticed...

Still might get fluid changed in case the track day overheated it.

Anyone know what fluid OPC use? IS it ATE 200?
 
There is a Porsche-branded brake fluid but in my personal experience its not good enough for track use. Recommend you request something that's more suited to race use - which will be a DOT4 (oddly not a 5.1) such as Motul RBT600, ATE Super Blue or - if you're feeling flush - Castrol SRF.

There is a Porsche-branded brake fluid but in my personal experience its not good enough for track use. Recommend you request something that's more suited to race use - which will be a DOT4 (oddly not a 5.1) such as Motul RBT600, ATE Super Blue or - if you're feeling flush - Castrol SRF.

Interesting - if the Porsche fluid is ATE 200, it's the same spec as Super Blue, except it's not dyed.

I wonder if the OPC would be prepared to use a different fluid like SRF as AFAIK the life is only 12 months?

I had the PC check out my brakes and they said they were fine and completely normal for the turbo. Like you Richard, had it not been for driving the 981 I wouldn't have questioned my brakes. The difference bewtween the two would appear to be normal! Anyway, my brakes stop the car very well.....
