Soft Brakes

Hi

I notice that if I leave my Cayman S in the garage for 3 or 4 weeks when I get it out the brake pedal is soft. If I drive off I have poor brakes until they have been used 4 or 5 times after which they firm up.

Alternatively I need to pump until firm before driving off.

If I use the car regular there is no problem. Is this to be expected as I have never experienced this with any other car.

All 23 months ago the brake fluid was last changed. It will be changed again at service in February 2014 Thanks for the reply Trevor
 
Not long to wait then Trevor. Maybe there's air in the system and they just need bleeding. The fluid change should sort the problem and the service diagnostic check will show up any errors. Like Richard, I've not had the problem you describe. Hope you get it sorted. Jeff
 
All Spoke to OPC today they think it could be a thin layer of corrosion on the inside of the disc giving the impression of lack of pressure Not convinced myself. Any thoughts? Trevor
 
The disks can corrode badly on the inside faces, and it is quite common on weekend cars. Having said that, I've seen quite a few that looked horrific, but hardly affected the feel of the brakes at all under normal use.

This is not right - there is air in the system if you can pump the brakes up to a harder pedal[;)]

All Just took the Cayman down to the Gower in Wales for the weekend a journey of approximately 100 miles each way. On leaving Friday night in the dry for at least 20 miles until I hit the M4 the brakes were know where near there best feeling soft and inefficient. As the journey lengthen they came back to normal. The last 30 miles in pouring rain. The Sunday return journey was completed with no loss of braking. Car not used Saturday Perhaps the corrosion theory has some value Trevor
 
I've known the corrosion around the edge of discs to hold off the pads to some degree but this has usually been when new pads have been fitted with old discs, under such circumstance it is prudent to clean off the edges, some places can refinish the discs on the car but it depends on the minimum recommended disc thickness. In this case Trevor I would favour air in the system being the cause. I had my fluid changed recently and the difference was noticeable.
