Soft Top Reproofing - It's back !!!!!

Now you're probably wondering what on earth I am ranting on about!

Yes it's back!!! [:D]

Several years ago BMW did a roof reproofing agent that was simple to use, was paint safe and you could apply when the roof was wet.

Four years ago they replaced it with a product that was similar that that of the Porsche one; the aerosol that goes everywhere except on the roof it also left blotches.

Well the good news is BMW have bought back the original product albeit in a new shaped bottle. (I know this as I have a bottle of it!)

To use: Wash the roof with a neutral detergent; rinse the roof; mix the contents of the bottle it a bucket with water (3:1); apply to roof with a sponge; allow roof to dry. Job done for another year!!

Any splashes on the paintwork can be rinsed off with water.

So much easier than the spray can!!!!

The cost around 20 pounds, the BMW product code (Sorry Porsche): 83 12 2 298 223

If they try and fob you off with the spray can you have the wrong product. The correct packaging is below:

Nick, have you tried the Autoglym roof cleaner/proofer ?

If so, how does this compare ?

I don't like anything that you have to spray; it goes everywhere and can also lead to over-treatment blotches.

The Autoglym product is similar to the Reveno one; You can get good end results but you have to be so careful.

I've used the BMW product on 3 cabs and never had any issues with it ..... So easy !!!

I used the Spray can type once ...... what a faff and mess !!!!

At around £20 just for the proofer, it sounds expensive!

I bought the 3 required Renovo products - shampoo, reviver/colourant and proofer - for about £40 when I bought my cab 20 months ago. I've cleaned, recoloured and reproofed the hood (2 coats of proofer each time) twice so far and still have enough of each to do the hood at least once more, maybe more than that. OK, the reviver is a real PITA as it's so thin and liquid it gets everywhere, so you need to mask everything up well and remove any "leakage" immediately - it's a pain if it dries on the paintwork! The proofer is also quite liquid but comes off with a damp rag while it's wet. Biggest lesson I learnt - follow the instructions and do not fold the roof for at least 24 hours after using the reviver - or you'll get lovely pale crease marks in the hood (bitter voice of experience!!).

Just use Fabsil liquid and put it on with a brush, used it on all my soft tops.

£11 for 2.5 litres, bargain......

Funnily enough, the chap I bought my cab from recommended Fabsil - which I used years ago to waterproof a canvas tent. OK, it waterproofs, but Renovo reviver took my faded grey blue hood back to a lovely dark blue!!

I have to say I used Fabsil on my old 2009 2.9. For ever after the roof up or down squeaked when going over uneven roads. Drove me mad []

I agree about spray proofers they go every where no control at all.
As a Car detailer by trade I use Renovo or Fabsil brush on proofer its a bit slower to do but worth it.
I do Tracys Boxster with Renovo once a year seems fine Its used everyday and lives outside.

Cliff.
