Softop not working but Clam is

All,
After trying to get the roof down the other day I was met with a few bangs and no movement in the roof, however the clamshell was working correctly. I've diagnosed that plastic cups on the pushrod ends have both snapped off (apparently its a common fault). Has anyone had the same experience and if so any tips on refitting new push rod ends, as I'm struggling on my '05' 987......

Cheers

Deano

Hi Deano
I’ve had exactly the same issue on my 05 987S the first time I operated the top this year. Because I had a heart attack a few weeks ago and it’s cold outside I took the car to Revolution Porsche and had the pushrods replaced there. I consider it to have been well worth the reasonable cost.

Hi Deano
No personal experience but i know problem has been covered on BoXa.net (everything you want to know or don't know is on there) and You Tube is always a good place for info

We had one plastic ball socket cup break on one side on a 986 at the time I couldn't seem to find the new ball socket cup to buy new so I bought a used arm and ball socket cup and just used the plastic ball socket which simply screws on the arm and with effort pushes onto the metal ball.
Hope you get it sorted good luck.

Thanks for that. I found the plastic ball sockets on ebay for £22 for a pair which was very useful, I'm just worried about mis-aligning the top when installing. Was it a simple case of screwing on with the top up and the clamshell at 45 degree or was it more fiddly than that?

Cheers

Yes funnily enough I found them yesterday and ordered a set for £22. They are coming from Stoke on Trent and they are supposed to be genuine part so lets see what the quality is like when they arrive. Thanks for the steer

Hi, thanks for the response and I hope you are well on the mend. I'm going to try and give it a go myself after finding the ends on ebay, but if its something I will struggle with (have very little patience) then it may well be a trip to my local Porsche specialist in Brackley.

Cheers again

It's an easy fix. Mark the position of the existing caps with tape before you remove them, then just screw the new ones on to the same position. It probably took me 30 mins to replace both and it only tookmthat long because i was being careful. There's a tool in the tool kit which you will need ( or something similar) to lever the caps onto the balljoints once in position. As mentioned above loads of info on Boxa.net if you do a search.

Cool, it sounds easy enough. as an aside when you refitted the rod ends was the roof fully up and the clam shell set at service mode (ie 45 degrees)? Or does it all sort itself out when fitted?

Pretty sure whole thing had to be in service position to facilitate access. There is a section in the owner's manual you can refer to.
