Soggy mat / loose wires

Hi Everyone

Greetings from a new(-ish) member and first-time poster- please excuse gaffes!
Spring-cleaning my 1990 C4 (LHD), lifted the driver's (left) side sound-proof matting and found the front (nearest the pedals) to be soaking wet. The liquid is yellowish, slightly sticky and has a chemical smell, so seems not to be water.
Also found a thin fabric-covered twin wire (brown / brown & green) with push-on connectors, coming out of the floor just below the pedal board on the left (clutch) side, lying loose and unconnected.
Any guidance on either of these issues gratefully received![&:]
Hope you've all been enjoying your cars in the fabulous weather (assuming you live in East Anglia!)[:D]

Regards
James

Hi James, welcome to 964 ownership [:)]

I've got the same wires that are unconnected. There could be a number of unconnected wires and plugs on your wiring loom. They are part of the standard loom and then get connected according to options selected when the car was ordered. e.g. I retrofitted an on board computer by buying the required indicator stalk and tachometer and then plugging it into the spare connectors that were already there. My guess is that our wires near the throttle pedal are for the cruise control option?

I'm going to assume the wires operate the cruise control, as they usually monitor brake and clutch, I have the wires, and in 7 years never found a use for them on my C2 manual.
Soundproofing is normall windscreen seals, or door seals, doors seals are the ones Southbound told me to look for as the door should be a wet type, meaning unless the inside skin is perfectly good, and the seals perfectly good it will ingress water.

Guys

Thanks for your response- you've both put my mind at rest about the wires. I was worried that I might have lost some crucial warning system! Re soggy mats, the mystery is that the liquid seems to be chemical, not water. Could i be getting a brake / clutch fluid leak in that area?

Thanks

James

only things i can think of in that area are brake fluid, washer bottle and fuel tank.. have you checked brake fluid to see if its similar colour/smell? also might be worth checking the little washer bottle (inside fuel filler flap) but i guess if its sticky and a strong colour its more likely to be brake fluid, possibly from the master cylinder?.. presumably the smell would be a give-away if it was petrol?!..

Yellowish and chemical- so, yes, brake fluid seems a likely candidate; that said, the fluid in the reservoir is at the right level, so it doesn't look as if there's a major leak. Could be time to take it to the garage for professional input......! Thanks for your ideas[:)].

I think you posted about this once before and it is an upgrade I would like to do. I tried to get hold of the tacho and stalk from one of the Porsche breakers who advertise in PP, but with no success. I don't really want to spend £££100's on the upgrade, but it is something I'd like to do nethertheless.

I think you can do non Imperial options a bit cheaper by sourcing from the US, but this would defeat the object for me.

Colin, keep an eye on ebay as they come up from time to time. A tacho came up about a month ago. They normally go for about £80. The column switches with the stalk are cheaper. Mine is a KMH version but is still very useful for the digital speed read out since the speedo is difficult to see with a clubsport wheel fitted [&:]. It's also good for travel in europe [8D].

Any ideas what the best/most approprite seach criteria would be?

Thanks for your help.
