Well, that's our 997 ownership over [] Despite the best efforts of the 997 Register South of France Trip participants to talk us out of it we've taken delivery of a brand spanker Nissan R35 GTR and bid Auf Wiedersehen to our C2S.

I really, really wish that we'd met the 997 Register guys sooner. I really, really wish that we'd had the benefit of their expertise and knowledge before. But even if we had, the fact would still remain that the backseat of a 911 is far too uncomfortable for anything more than a quick trip to school even for a 10 year old. The GTR has a really good back seat and tons of front legroom enabling me to get my seat far enough forward for our son to be really comfortable in the back and me very comfortable in the front even on a long journey.

And then there's the performance. If it wasn't for that pesky rear seat requirement we'd probably have upgraded to a 997 Turbo S or a GT3 as the C2S, capable as it is, just doesn't have the 'woo-hoo' factor. The GTR has it in spades, and until it's done 600 miles we're restricted to 3500rpm. Once the full 543bhpps/600Nm is unleashed I think we're going to have lots of fun.

After our French adventures, parting with the 997 left me with a heavy heart, but it was more because of the missed opportunities and the prospect of losing newly found friends than any regret at selling the car.

I hope that the GTR turns out to be every bit as enjoyable as we hope. And whether it does or not, I certainly wouldn't rule out a return to 911 ownership in the future. Once our son is too old to be seen in public with his parents I predict the call of Stuttgart in the guise of a GT3 like a siren call in Paul's ears.

Auf Wiedersehen, Porsche - for now.

Carina, good luck to you and Paul, I'm sure you'll enjoy the Datsun. As long as you promise not to tell anyone I'll let you into a secret, I nearly bought one instead of my first Carrera. It was the Porsche tradition that swung it for me. Matt's 16 now and he still gets in the back for our tours ( and the SW drive) but it does take him a week before he can stand up straight again!

Keep in touch, we enjoyed having you on the tour and will hopefully bump into you again ( not literally!) in the future.

Very happy to update you all with how we find the Fast Datsun. Don't want to tempt too many of you to the 'dark side' though, might make us rather unpopular [:D]

Mark, we had a whale of a time and are already looking at putting together a select group of enthusiasts to do another one of your trips. Yes, it was very ambitious. No, it didn't suit everyone. But I figure that as long as both organisers and participants are clear about what's required & the etiquette of 'I'll sit this one out, see you at the hotel later', a good time will be had by all.

I can vouch for the leg room in the back I don't know what your son is complaining about !!

Thanks again,

You need soul as well as speed and lets hope we have made the right decision so far I'm happy !!!!!!!!

Enjoy the Jap .... and keep in touch.

Geoff

Well the things you learn in one thread eh!!

1) That we've lost a register member
2) Another member nearly bought one
3) Geoffs got a new avantar ? seems it may have been the last run out for more than one Porsche on the Big Tour [:)]

Carina, I can understand the purchase, certainly if you feel that your son can't get in the back.
Nice to think that the trip and your Porsche will leave some happy memories with PCGB
It's also great to hear that your thinking of touring again with the new motor, it seemed that the crowd was mainly show and shine but nice to hear you and Paul are going to use it properly [:)]

Hopefully you can afford us a picture

Nothing is forever - even for those driving Maccas! [8|]

Carina and Paul - it was great meeting up with you both and we're sorry to be losing you from 997 Register so soon , but please keep in touch.

Taking delivery of a new motor is a wonderful experience and I hope you will enjoy it to the full. Maybe we'll be seeing you back with us again one day.[;)]

In the meantime - ATB

Clive.

We may not have a Porsche anymore but we'll definitely keep in touch. We had such a great time with you all it would be a shame not to see you all again. Paul might even be able to keep up with you in the Nissan (big maybe!). (Gary sent me a link to join the 997 Google group but it doesn't seem to work [:(])

I know what Geoff means about 'soul' and I do think the GTR has one, once the running in period is done I forsee many adventures [:D] From the avatar are we to assume that Mr Lane has forsaken forced induction for the thrill of something a bit more raw?

And I haven't taken any decent pictures of it yet, but here's a couple of it being collected by two rather excited boys...

Cool [8D], from the pictures it almost looks the same colour as your Porsche was.

As said, it was a shame that you only joined in with the register just prior to leaving it..[;)]. but from chatting it's the tune-ability that interests Paul quite a bit with the Nissan.
No one will argue with the power and drivability it has, interesting how we describe soul in a car and whether it turns out to have it... I know I'd like to one day own a similar type of car to enjoy the motoring.

After watching this you'll know where to take yours! :)

I heard a couple of GTRs flying past in the opposite carriageway and my god it sounded amazing for a Turbo - must have some sort of exhaust/air intake modification.

Oh good grief, don't give Paul any more encouragement, he's already spending far too much time on the Litchfield website!

They do snarl quite nicely - none of the horrible whooshing and dump-valve noise you get from lower end turbo charged motors [:)].

I thought when Paul and Clive were going through the Reims grandstand, they both sounded pretty awesome!!

Like I said, proper turbo charged motors, none of your cheap rubbish [;)]

all I heard was a sonic boom when Clive went past :)

[:D]

And me saying "f**k me!" as I hadn't seen him coming! My heart missed several beats - a few more and Andy would have had to administer CPR [:-]

Y'know all those Datsun jibes......? Well, well......

Going back to their roots - cheap & nasty by the looks of it. I suppose the Datsun brand is to Nissan what Skoda is to Porsche within the VW group!
