Well, that's our 997 ownership over [] Despite the best efforts of the 997 Register South of France Trip participants to talk us out of it we've taken delivery of a brand spanker Nissan R35 GTR and bid Auf Wiedersehen to our C2S.
I really, really wish that we'd met the 997 Register guys sooner. I really, really wish that we'd had the benefit of their expertise and knowledge before. But even if we had, the fact would still remain that the backseat of a 911 is far too uncomfortable for anything more than a quick trip to school even for a 10 year old. The GTR has a really good back seat and tons of front legroom enabling me to get my seat far enough forward for our son to be really comfortable in the back and me very comfortable in the front even on a long journey.
And then there's the performance. If it wasn't for that pesky rear seat requirement we'd probably have upgraded to a 997 Turbo S or a GT3 as the C2S, capable as it is, just doesn't have the 'woo-hoo' factor. The GTR has it in spades, and until it's done 600 miles we're restricted to 3500rpm. Once the full 543bhpps/600Nm is unleashed I think we're going to have lots of fun.
After our French adventures, parting with the 997 left me with a heavy heart, but it was more because of the missed opportunities and the prospect of losing newly found friends than any regret at selling the car.
I hope that the GTR turns out to be every bit as enjoyable as we hope. And whether it does or not, I certainly wouldn't rule out a return to 911 ownership in the future. Once our son is too old to be seen in public with his parents I predict the call of Stuttgart in the guise of a GT3 like a siren call in Paul's ears.
Auf Wiedersehen, Porsche - for now.
