Solid transmission mounts

One of the next changes I want to make to my white car when it's back is to get rid of the movement of the transmission, I swear I can feel it moving around when pushing on on track and would like to remove this slack as it's out of keeping with the rest of the car.

From the limited information I've found it's wisest to do this in conjunction with the engine mounts. I'm not worried about noise or vibration so can consider this.

I've only just started looking, but the Lindsey solid transmission mount appeals and they also do engine mounts which even allow the engine to be dropped (not likely to be an option for me as a lower chassis brace will limit downward movement). The Ultramount looks like it might be what I'm looking for.

Any thoughts or experiences would be gratefully received!

Id be interested in this also as i have a kokeln solid rear mount but i havent got round to fitting it yet !!

You can also weld up the original mount for the same benefit but without wasting money on spurious Lindsey products.

Peter, a friend of mine put in the half solid LR motor mounts and I thought it was fine although the mechanics thought for a road car it was a bit loud. I also know of guys moulding up some urethane around a stock trans mount that seemed to have helped. Another thing that I know a few guys have done on their 951s is to make up a trans brace. This has supposedly helped a lot on CV and axle failure rates as well. I'm strongly considering doing it. I'll see if I can find a link.
In fact just go onto Rennlist, then do an 'Advanced Search'. Type in Trans Brace and then go to the 944 turbo forums and you'll come up with a bunch of threads that will have some mention of the solid trans brace. Look for user 95ONE.

I have a feeling there is a motorsport component which is a near solid trans mount. Not that that helps as I even have the part number somewhere for the motorsport quick rack, but could anyone in the Porsche network in the UK find it for me? Nope.

It was on my list of things to do as the standard one is like a blancmange.

Fen.
The item your refuring to , was for the 968. I think it was the 968 turbo [motorsport] mount. It had rubber inserts just like the standard version. Just the rubber was VERY stiff.
Only problem. There are none left ,, in the world....[][8|][][8|]
Peter.
I might be able to help you out..
If you look at frogislands mount. I have one the same. BUT unmodified. We bought a pair of these. They were supposed to fit both the S2 + 968, but as frogisland found out, it didnt fit to the 968 without modding. The S2/turbo gearbox mounts are slightly different to the 968...I have one "unmodded" that i was going to fit to my S2, but never did...Seeing as i havnt got the car anymore, its spare, As as quite a few other parts...Its brand new...
Ill check out what it cost me + let you know...
Interested...????

Thanks for all the great responses. Dave please let me know about the mount, it sounds ideal.

Has anyone run uprated engine mounts too, I'm just thinking about the stresses involved although I see from those Rennlist threads that many people just leave it standard.

Re engine motor mounts Rick C has used Super mounts form Lindsey Racing, which are no longer available but are apparently the same as their current Ultra mounts minus the height adjustment feature. As far as I can remember he seems to be pleased with them.
Patrick, are those the ones your friend has had fitted?

Yep Thom they're the ones. I went in his car and didn't mind it at all. As mentioned my mechanics seemed to feel that they increased cabin noise at a certain rpm. I think for something of the nature of Peter's car, it wouldn't be a problem at all. I'd consider some too.

Peter is this definitely the trans or perhaps the torsion bar tube/spring plates and banana arms? I remember before I had all my bushes replaced the car always felt to me like the rear end was dragging around like it had a small amount of RWS. I had all the mounts replaced with new OEM bushes and had weltmeister USA delrin bushes put into the spring plate where it all connects with the torsion bar. Until this last week I was convinced I had to take these bushes out because they seemed to squeak and bind. However driving the car this week it all seems fine no odd noises, ride OK but back to back against my 968 the positive location of the rear end is like a night and day difference, my S2 just feels so sharp in comparison. I think the problem I had was that I used to live up a dusty track and I think sand/dust/grit was getting in there and stopping the bushing from working, in fact since I moved house it all seems fine so I am happy again [:)].

Sorry if we have covered this before and you already have modified rear bushings.

I have the same bushes Neil. Sorry to disappoint, but in winter they are silent. Come warmer weather the mice will be back, though.

I hadn't credited them with making much difference as I fitted them at the same time as the poly front bushes, new rear beam mounts, Weltmeitser ARBs and KW coilovers, but I think yuo might be right about more positively locating the back end.

Good question, I really don't know, it's just what it felt like to me. I'm not planning on fitting the trans mount right away so I'll do as I usually do and start hoarding bits so I can do the whole lot at the same time. From memory I have the elephant racing bearings in the spring plate (we did so much to my car in a short space of time when I had the suspension rebuilt last that I've lost track of exactly what was fitted [:)]).

I hadn't realised Rick had the engine mounts, I certainly didn't notice any obvious vibration when being in his car so they're something else to add to the shopping list [:D].

Damn [:(] I was feeling fairly smug but like you say when the warmer weather comes they might start binding again [:(]
Its not just the noise you can feel a difference in ride quality which I guess must be caused by them binding up a little.

..and replacement spring plates from the OPC are like 450 quid a pair [:(]

I might have to go for the Elephant jobbies, I have the banana arm bushes still sat in their little baggy waiting to go on for 2 years now. Very tempted to make the S2 much more serious and swap out the koni and 968 M030 arbs onto my 968 but I just can't make up my mind what to do.......

Without a doubt I'd have gone Elephant Racing had I heard about them before the Weltmeister ones were fitted. It's probably the one biggest thing I'd do differently if I was building the car again. Well, aside spending the money I put into the 4-banger on a decent V8 engine of course.

I have had to regularly repack the Elephant ones with grease too so it would seem none of them are permanently silent.

Just stumbled on these which are the Super mounts mentioned - so apparently they can still be had.
