Some Christmas mischief

I enjoyed the Total 911 article comparing the 993 with the 964 RS but was struck by the omission of a 'standard' 964 RS. I wonder how that would have panned out?

Particularly struck by this thought as when Evo ran their 911 Supertest back in Sep 2001 (using Mr Probert's rather excellent example as well), aside from some faint praise about (i) the engine note at idle, (ii) the build quality, and (iii) the gearchange, I recall that the 993 did not even rate a mention in the 'what's best?' summary (being elbowed aside by the 911 Clubsport, the 964 RS and the GT3 Mk1).

The conclusion was particularly galling as at the time I was awaiting the delivery of my 993 - and the magazine in question was my only reading material for my summer holiday (and the conclusion did not get any better no many time I re-read it. The 'not hardcore enough' Evo summary still grates.

Why do we think the 993 went from being a zero to a hero (rash overstatement I accept) in the two comparisons?

I hardly ever take these magazines reviews seriously, most of the guys driving have just jumped out of testing some hot hatch or something.

I have autocar tests where 993 RS is rated 2nd to the Mclaren F1 as best drivers car ever and also when the mk2 GT3 came out Autcar took various 911 to the ring and despite it being a Gt3 test raved about the 993RS.....I drove that actual 993 and although fine, certainly wasn't an exempelary specimen.
So for all the good articles there are some that don't rate the 993 in the 20 minutes they get to drive one.
They are all great cars and I am sure that those of us who actually spend our own money on our choice of Porsche are more clued up than most of the journalists with respect to the merits of the individual variants.

I thought it was established that John P had bribed the editor, so his car would win [:D]

I find it easier to base my opinions of cars on what I actually like and drive.

I do read the mags occasionally but only to find out what someone elses opinion is - if its different or the same to mine I care little....

Hi Chaps,
Firstly, I better just set the record straight, that regardless of what the 64RS boys tell you, I did not bribe the editor(for this feature anyway)[:D][:D]
I think that Clubsport is right, in that at the end of the day, it is one man opinion on the day and the recent Total 911 editor, obviously had a soft spot for the 993.
Also, a couple of weeks before the feature my car had been into Tech 9 for a huge service, which included new, clutch, brakes, and dampers.Since I am aiming to do the full 07 Speed Championship calander, they also set the car up really well and she felt very sharp and probably the nicest in the 7 years I have owned her(well done Tech 9[:)])
So I think both of these points contributed to helping on the day[8|]

testimony itself that the comparisons are always made time and time again between the 2.7RS, 964RS and 993RS...like comparing fine wine.....greatest, best who cares... all three are always there together.....[:)]

Paul I would not expect you for one second to share this valued statement, yes the odd corked wine may appear but in the fine vintage of Chateau 964RS or indeed the other air-cooled RS vintages, have yet to find one corked, they ALL seem to do what it says on the label and taste superb everytime. A very happy Christmas Paul...............enjoy that special vintage[;)]
