Some Historical Insight for PDK Fans

Yes, quite an achievement Andrew, but it should be remembered that VAG under Piëch had the DSG transmission in production well in advance of Porsche’s PDK.

I’m not sure if VAG manufacture the DSG transmissions themselves or if they’re built under licence by Borg Warner, while PDK transmissions are manufactured by ZF, and I’ve heard that parts are available for DSG whereas, as we know, Porsche won’t make them available for PDK.

I saw the Rennlist link some time ago and posted it elsewhere on here (you have to admire the American “can-do” attitude[;)]). I also tried contacting T-Design who make the aftermarket gear position sensor mentioned asking if there was a UK agent or specialist who could fit it but didn’t get any response from them.

The M2 will provide an interesting comparison with your Porsches, past and present; keep us posted. Fingers crossed that the Getrag DCT is reliable … have you asked BMW if it’s repairable?

Not yet asked but am currently researching everything relevant, not come across too many horror stories as yet. As with Porsche it appears it`s a replace over repair. Fluid - filter change intervals also under investigation

Unlike Porsche the extended warranty cover is direct with BMW, details of which are under review

I drove a F87 manual M2 pre COVID and was well impressed with the N55 370bhp unit and it`s overall feel - handling. T`was let down by a poor driving position, too high a seat (electric) with a crap gearshift interface. This DCT version has the lower manual seat, failing that I have a spare Recaro SPG bucket that could be installed :p

Just back from `the test` ... the car is a late 2017 with 19,000 miles and just pre OPF [:)]

Overall am well impressed, extremely smooth changes in all three modes but did not `push it` hence may get `harsher` in Sport + ?

Have not driven a PDK for two years and that was a late 2013 Cayman S, so from what I recall they are well matched albeit the DCT is a manual box `modified` for auto use. The DCT has no PARK facility or AUTO HOLD, it has a manual-lever handbrake and when you come to a stop remains in DRIVE and does not `creep`. NEUTRAL is across the `gate` from DRIVE and leads up to REVERSE a la a manual `box. The engine is started and stopped in DRIVE ... takes a little getting used to :rolleyes:

The car itself `feels` great, like the Porsche you are immediately aware that you are in `something special` :p

To correct a few of my initial experiences ... there is a HOLD on inclines albeit with a time limit / the PARK position is achieved by switching off in DRIVE

Like the PDK it changes down under hard braking, one of my favoured `modes` - SPORT / SPORT PLUS being well similar to the PDK in their increasingly defined performance. The engine `overboost` to 500 Nm under full throttle is [X(] :p and easily managed by the `box

DCT maintenance is classed under the typical `lifetime` banner, I have found an independent who recommends servicing every 50k but more frequent if tracked ... cost is noted as ~ £700
