Some info on 993 Turbos please!

After 4 years of enjoying my 993 C4 immensely and having finished the kitchen, I have now decided to go for a 993 Turbo over the next few months hopefully.
From a bit of research, it seems that the 1997 onwards models had a few changes such as 'improved' engine ECU and stronger 1st gear etc. However, and having read Paul Frere's excellent book, I can find no further info on these other than the gearing was raised/changed on all (?) 1997 cars for drive-by noise regs.
Does anyone know if the changes were specific to a chassis number, build date or model year please?
Any help would be much appreciated.

You also get G64/20 ratios in some MY 96 cars so the change over happened at some time during 1996.

I read somewhere when I was doing a bit of research before buying mine (97 R), that most of the upgrades for that model year were to the gearbox and ECU.

The main difference being that some of the gearbox shafts were stronger than the earlier cars, that had been known to bend or break under extreme hard driving. I was also under the impression that the ECU is easier to remap. There are other minor differences on the PET CD too, I recently changed the intercooler hoses on mine and noticed they are different part no`s on the 97 onwards compared to the earlier ones.

Thanks guys!
It seems that I should ideally be looking at August '97 (R) onwards to be on the 'safe' side then as I seem to be unable to stop myself from tweaking cars after a while with AMD's help!! [:D]
In the meantime, I shall also see if I can a obtain a copy of the PET too - maybe I can spot a chassis # change for peace of mind.
Happy New Year!
