First of all hello,

I am looking to get a 997 C4S.

a little new to the Porsche understanding the models Ect

Currently we have a Audi TT which will be going and an Evolution VIII MR FQ-300 running at 370bhp which is staying!

anyway

what common faults are there to look out for also what model/spec should i be looking at the budget it 30-35K what can i expect to get for my money?

whats the service intervals

i am in the W/yorkshire area

Thanks for any info

Rob

Welcome to the forum Rob. Probably too much to answer in one post but I can get the ball rolling!
The 997 range has more variants than you can shake a stick at and opinions will be divided about the best one!

For me - a C2S coupe manual would be the choice, but you have the choice of coupe, cab or targa (retracting glass roof), 2 or 4 wd, manual or tiptronic. (also the non "S" Carrera - 3.6 with all the above variations!)

For your budget - possibly a MY2005/6 car
No particular common faults but RMS (rear main seal) can leak oil - not terminal but a nuisance. Brake discs corrode/rust.
I would recommend a Porsche Centre approved car as this will come with 2 year warranty but of course the down side is that it will cost more than an independent/private sale.

Options - I would look for PSE (sports exhaust - just because it sounds nice) Short shifter, PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) to name a few but most cars should have a decent spec. X51 powerkit would be a real bonus!

Service intervals 2 years/20,000 miles with big(ger) service at 4 years (40000)

Hope that's some help and I'm sure others will be along soon to give their two pennies worth.[:D]

Thanks for your response i know with certain cars until you look into it there are so many variations they make your head spin!

now i have more info to look at i will do some more research does the forum have a model comparison so i can look at the different specs and optional extras

Thanks and any more info will be great

Haven't pitched in because Alan has summed up my feelings - for obvious reasons! I have owned the Gen1 C2S with a manual box and it's a real pleasure to own and drive. Some owners love and swear by the 4wd but personally I like the narrower body of the 2wd and the more 'nimble' handling experience. Traction is not an issue at sensible road speeds anyway IMO.
The tiptronic gearbox, if you are considering that option, is an excellent automatic and makes commuting a more comfortable experience. On the manual side, the clutch on a 2005/6 car needs to be checked out - mine was due one at 40k miles.
What should you expect for your money? Look at the usual sites and dealers and you'll find a cracker with your budget - be patient and one with the extras that appeal to you will turn up. Try a car with sports seats, I find them ultra comfortable, but don't suit everyone. Other than that, nearly every C2S will have satnav optioned and bose speakers most likely. Colour will be up to you but silver, silvery grey, light grey, mid grey, dark grey, light black and dark black were most popular. Oh, mine was red...

Good luck with the search.

Rob,
To my knowledge there isn't a model comparison on the forum but if you look through the used car locator on the Porsche GB website you should get a good feel for options

http://www.porsche.com/uk/approvedused/usedcarlocator/911/

You could also look at the Porsche car configurator

http://cc.porsche.com/icc_euro/ui/pva/fs_global.jsp?RT=1295297890421&PARAM=parameter_internet_en&LANG=en&USER=EN&BOS=win&BV=8&BF=ie4&BORG=microsoft

as although these represent the latest version, 997 Gen 2, most of the options apart from PCM 3, PDK and the UAI are the same as on the Gen 1 cars! (I think!)

To update my post,

I am awaiting my C2S arrival, the service has been done by Porsche today so with some look i will have the car for the weekend

i opted for the Seal Grey it seems to be a better suited color in my opinion,

Test drove the car the other day not a patch on my dear old Evo VIII but we have to grow up dont we well, at least thats what the wife says

looking forward to getting the car and learning to get the most out of the experence,

It is my first Porsche so dont really have anything to compaire against, any faults i should look out for?

I purchased the car from FA Ropers i understand they are reputable i also have a 12 month warranty which is through AXA

lets hope its as much fun

has anyone else come from Evo to 911 owership and whats the experience they have had during the change over?

I had a 350 bhp Scooby many, many moons ago which is not too dissimilar. How did it compare to the 997? Well, put it like this........you can get high on cheap cider just as easily as with a vintage Chateauneuf. In fact it may take a little longer with the beautiful wine but the pleasure in doing so is so much more enjoyable........

I had Evo 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5 & 9 including full house Group N cars for rallying that I built myself. (I used to import new ones for several years) They're super cars, but not comparable quite frankly.

Completely different ethos. [8D] As you say, you have to grow up sometime. [8|]

I have been getting used to the 911 and growing to love it at first i felt a little worried i purchased the car for the image,
the EVO was pure fun and has a stigma attached boy racer, idiot ect..

I am a Car enthusiast and worried that the 911 would not fit in with my love for cars tinker modding wise

but so far so good its in a different legue to the evo a nice balance of power and looks just as good stood still

on thing hasnt changed though people dont let you out at junctions!

i think this will be the first in a long line of Porsches i am 31 years old and feel lucky to have the oppotunity to own one.

I used to have an Evo 6 back in 2000, was one of the first in my area to get one, most people didn't even know what it was so usually came over for a chat. Really enjoyed the all Evo thing back then, did several track days over a 3 year period, several every month during the summer.

I used to think it was the quickest thing on the road back then, and to be honest it very rarely got beaten down my favorite local roads. [;)]

Then I bought my current car, and decided ohhhhh, how I was so disillusioned ! ............................. There's quick, and then there's down right fast as f*** !! [:D]

Keep it quiet, I do enjoy a Scooby and EVO tease every so often on the road [;)] [:)]
You have to watch out for the tuned little bug**rs though :ROFLMAO:

All said in good humour I may add.
