Some observations on a new Audi E-Tron EV

My son is using one of the vehicles above, it's his boss's... brand new with only 65 miles on the clock when my son took it for the weekend.
Observation:
1: why the hell is everything on a car that relies on it's battery power 'Electric', for example... the mirrors, well no mirror per se, it's all done by camera's. To say this car is fully loaded is an understatement, it has lights everywhere, you open the door and find 'E-TRON' is projected onto the floor? it has every add on you can think off, sensors galore, HUD display. Put the heater on and bang, there go 15 miles in range.
2: my son had to put some charge into it, didn't use the 13amp supply at home as it takes an eternity, I mean, IIRC a nights charge might give you enough to cover 50 miles.. might, I can't recall the exact figure.
3: He took it to a fast-charging point in Harrow, left the car there to charge for a while, when he picked it up the bill was £15, this gave hin a range of 90 just miles???
4: The lights turn on as soon as you disarm it and I think, remain on when you get out and these are big bright lights, ok they are bound to be LED's but if you have to have auto lights why not use some smaller sidelights?

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice looking 4X4 SUV, it's massive and I suppose very heavy, but why have everything electric when it shortens the range so much?

There's just no logic in it...

Pete

the EV market is mostly bull, and they are running before they can even crawl, then of course you can add the other 15 grand to the price for EV,

A Q5 goes from 45K to 60K for the EV option,

Pete please ????????????????????????????????dont mention electric ?? cars.........It gives me nightmares!!! ??????

oh, I don't know?, if money was no object, I could go for the new Tesla roadster, 0-60 in 1.9 secs, IIRC a standing 1/4 of 8 secs, top speed of over 250mph and a range of approx 650 miles...

mind you, their massive semi rig gets to 60 quicker than a standard 951 S...:)

We'll be wondering when Matron is coming to change our nappy, and who that ancient bloke in the mirror is, long before petrol goes out of fashion Pete. [;)]

Fellow petrolheads, even I can see the future and for better or worse its electric because sooner or later we have to stop taking carbon from the ground and trees and putting it into the atmosphere. That's just a fact, and the sooner we do it the longer we can enjoy classics. So when I jump in my EV to drive to the station on a dark November morning, do I miss the noise and drama of my 944?
Workplace and destination charging is the solution we will get to, so you can use a cheap 7kW charger to give you 100% by the time you've finished work etc.
So get an EV and keep your classic, save the planet (eventually) and enjoy your 944 as well, what could be better?

You and Greta should spread your message to places like India, China and Russia. They haven't realised yet that massively subsidised electricity production means a few get rich while the masses pay twice for their energy.

Are you proposing clockwork mirrors and windows then Pete? :ROFLMAO:

We had one in the workshop a few weeks ago and it is just huuuuuge and I imagine it's the wrong side of 2 tonne so the battery capacity must be immense.

£15 is equivalent to 10 litres of unleaded, I think 90 miles is an absolute bargain in a vehicle that size. I bet the petrol Q7 does about 40-50 miles on 15 quid!

I don't have a message only facts, question is what should we do? You and Donald would surely get on, not sure about me and Greta though. Would she approve of a 944 Turbo?

Facts? Since 1990 the UK has cut it's emissions faster than any other major economy. Rather picking a safe easy target, why don't you protest to China, which is the worlds biggest polluter?

If your countrie's electricity generation is largely fossil fuel powered (UK, Germany, US, to name but a few) then electric cars produce more CO2 than equivalent sized diesel cars over an 8 year life cycle, IF you consider the CO2 released as a result of manufacturing the vehicles as well as running. Which if you care about the environment you should take into account.

That is not my unsubstantiated opinion. Several studies have been done that show this. The most notable, a Tesla vs an E Class diesel ran for 8 years in Germany. The Telsa produced 30% more CO2 than the E Class. 8 years was chosen as it's the anticipated life of the Tesla battery pack.

By the time the UK runs its national grid on predominantly none fossil fuels, decades away, any electric car currently purchased will have been scrapped off anyway. So right now, nobody in the UK should be buying electric cars, if truly caring for the environment is their agenda.

And whilst on the subject of the national grid, who will pay/when is it going to be upgraded so that it has enough power carrying capacity to charge everyone electric car at 6pm when they get home? A larger capacity national grid is a huge undertaking, makes HS2 seem like a backyard project.

That all makes sense to me....I think the Political "B" word has illustrated the masses are becoming much more savvy and beginning to question not just what and why the country is being run like it is but also recognising we're all have and are still being led down certain paths all because this is the direction the powers and establishment desire....!
