Hi,
I have recently purchased a 1977 911, UK spec. It has a 1988 3.2 engine and super sport body.

I have identified some faults and would like assistance please.

1. When driving in heavy traffic, if I let go of the clutch with very little acceleration, the car starts to jerk and splutter. Is it that air/fuel is not getting through? Apart from that it drives fine, normal movement with normal use of the acceleration causes no problems.

2. The oil level gauge reads full all the time. Is it a sender problem? Is so where is the sender located? can I easily replace it myself? if so how?


3. The oil pressure gauge reads between, 3-4 all of the time and sometimes during driving it will become erratic and move violently. Is it a sender problem? Is so where is the sender located? can I easily replace it myself?, if so how?

4. The small side indicator light on the wing on the driver side doesn't work. How can I take of the lens to replace the bulb?

5. When I press the wiper switch to activate the screen washers, I can hear the motor noise, but don't get any water out. I've filled the tank to maximum. Any ideas?

A few questions and answers:

1) Do you use Shell Optimax? I had the problems you mentioned until I did. I find the higher octane makes the tickover a little sweeter.

2) Yes, it looks like the sender has failed, or come disconnected. It' s in the rear offside and is easy to find... those two stray wires going into the oil tank!

3) My oil pressure bounces about a bit, but in general is 1.25 on tickover, rising linearly to 4 at 4000 rpm

4) ?

5) There are two water tanks. One " ordinary" tank in the fuel cap area and one (high intensity) one in the front luggage area... are you filling them both?

4) The small side indicator light just pulls out from memory. It has a gasket that holds it in place.

5) You want to check all hoses are connected in addition to the two tanks Lloyd mentions. You can check for blockages with compressed air if you have access to a compressor. You may even be able to use the little tyre inflating compressor together with an attachment you might use for inflating an air mattress.
