Some recent incar track video.

I was asked to show some video after posting some pics recently.
This was taken the same day as the recent photos. Unfortunately you can see & hear understeer in plentiful amounts and some snap oversteer too, but we managed to dial this out later in the day....except the video battery ran out. [] It was going noticeably better then.

This was with the old wheels and R spec tyres (Toyo R888) not the nice new slicks, as we'd only just heat cycled them in. Next time.

Cars at the track that day varied from a few Porsches, Evos, WRXs, Caterhams, Radicals, local V8 muscle, and even a Lancia Delta Integrale. Guess which car spilled oil all over the track. Mumma Mia!

I suddenly found a Radical right behind me leading onto the main straight so naturally I gave it all she had. I actually started pulling away from him so knowing that he'd be all over me in the following corners I slowed to let him past. Wish we had the car setup a little better then. Would have been nice to see how long I could keep sight of him. They do look like an awful lot of fun though.

As usual, there are some moments of jumping on the video. Not sure why this happens when uploading to YouTube. Does drive me batty.

Excellent stuff.

That corner at the end of the pit straight............you stay in 5th.................must be an adrenalin rush especially with the oil dust on the track [8D][8D] what is the corner speed there? Must be high but the run off isnt massive [8|]

That little button you keep pressing in the first video..............??

Makes me jealous, I`m not out on track again for a couple of weeks [&o]

It is indeed fun. More of this tomorrow at a different track. Quite a big event with lots of high hp Japanese cars so I hope not to come stone motherless last.

The first corner is a good 'un. I used to brake hard briefly and shift down to 4th to get a better 'sit' and grab the apex more easily, but now I just brake and hold 5th. However I have a considerably shorter gearbox than stock as it has an S2 ring and pinion. This gives a very different driving experience. In fact it's a mod that I recommend to most owners unless you do a lot of Motorway driving. Really livens the whole car up a lot. Great for trackdays but also good around the city. Probably not so good on the petrol consumption though. Later in the day I was just touching an indicated 240kmh on the straight. I think if you get a good entry into turn 1 you can go through there at about 200kmh +/- and you carry some decent speed right past the 100mtr sign for turn 2. I think I was still near 200kmh at that sign, so the brakes are starting to work better. I believe the drilled rotors have helped markedly.

The button I'm trying and failing to press is the lap timer. GPS system. It seems to be reasonably accurate although on club days the official telemetry gives me better times so I'm happy with that.

Make sure you get some video Paul. I love watching anyone's trackdays and I find it's educational too. You can see places where you can improve the next time. Some of the guys in our club download and watch inbetween sessions with data logging. I'll have to get to that point soon.

I'd just like to say that the reason that I post things about my car isn't to show off, but because I really love the car and also hope that others can appreciate it, just as I love to see similar threads from anyone who is as enthusiastic about pushing their cars and pushing the 944 model in general. We all love our cars and for differing reasons. I like to push the boundaries a little but it's on behalf of us all as a group on an international scale. These cars were prematurely extinguished so it's nice to see that they can still be made to keep up and even embarrass much newer and more sophisticated products.

Speech over. Back to the program.

No I agree mate, I love to see in car vids from these cars. The recent ones from the RS day where very good. I also agree on the bit about seeing how yourself and others are driving. The hot bit of kit at the moment is the little 150 quid gomotorsport pro. They have them on the GPR website for example and various other outlest. Ppl that have used this little camera are raving about it.

Best 44/68 related vid I have seen is the one of the NGT 968 doing a 7:40ish lap of the ring, don't have the link to hand but man watching that car through the bends he is really flying.

Forgot to add that you displayed some pretty tasty driving there IMHO. One thing I have tried to focus on myself is getting the gap between coming of the brakes and getting on the throttle right down, not easy to do and in some respects I have a car setup approach to help with this, in that vid I can see you are on the throttle straight away, Nice. Also I see you needed some quick hands in a couple of places when you got some pretty quick oversteer going on, the way you hanged on to that formula car for a while shows you were certainly not hanging about, Very Nice.

Thanks for responding Neil.
Wow 7:40 at the 'ring is amazingly quick!! I'd like to see that video. Surely not an n/a car?
I've actually just got myself one of those little cameras. The footage you see here is not from that, but I hope to use it today.

Thanks on the driving comments. Of course I look at these and see so many mistakes but that's the beauty of capturing it and being able to review afterwards. I think anyone who goes to the track should do this. It will definitely help for sure.
I guess the one advantage of having a large turbo is with the bit of lag, it allows me to get on and off the pedals quickly without having to worry about an instant kickback that an on edge n/a car would perhaps react like? Not sure, but I'm pretty used to my car by now so I don't even think about what I'm doing.
I think the guy in the Radical must have been pottering about because I was able to hang onto him for too long especially with the handling of my car at the time.
Well I'm off again for another day. Hope to get some more good footage.

Oh here's a bit of crappy hand held stuff of my car that day with a friend driving it. Excuse the lack of quality, but at least you get to see it from the outside.

I presume this is the car :

The 968 was ISTR turbo'ed but only to something like 290 Bhp, it looked amazingly quick through the corners I will look for the weblink.

On the NA cars characteristics I find I can get straight onto the throttle OK but its nothing more then part throttle anyway as I ease the peddle down to full throttle again. One thing I found years ago just driving on the road was that the cars basic setup meant that if you got on the throttle early the front would lift and the car instantly understeers and runs wide. I hate this so played around, fitted 15 mm spacers on the back and 6mm on the front so I can drive the thing round corners without any understeer ever under throttle. Thing is though the S2 race cars I have seen here go in completely the opposite direction and fit massive front spacers. It will be very interesting to see what my car is like when the re-shell is done and I have the GAZ 2-ways on, I may find that I need to alter my chassis setup again, who knows.

That is the one, cheers thanks. It is still staggering watching that vid again how quick that car is through the corners.

Well understeer is the prevailing tendency on our cars as you know. There are a few things you can do of course. The 'nose in the air-push' sounds like softer springs as well. There are a few people putting wider rubber on these cars and running a square setup front and rear to success. The pics of my car with the black wheels are with 285/35 Falken slicks all round. These would be easily equivalent to 300mm trackwidth as they're much bigger/wider than road tyres. For the few laps that I drove with them on to heat cycle them in they felt fine as far as not being too big. I'll know the next time I go to the track.
Keep us in the loop in regards to progress of your build Neil. Sounds great!

Only just got round to watching the vids Patrick, but have to echo everyone elses comments. Certainly looks a bit frisky when it wants to, I hope you get on top of the handling soon, but still looks a lot of fun and sounds the business too. It's refreshing to see overtaking being allowed on both sides, I far prefer this but sadly is very rarely allowed at UK trackdays.
