Some rust requires attention.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum business, therefore forgive me if the format is incorrect.
I have a Black 964 Carrera 4 (1990) with 130,000 miles. I'm requiring some rust area's to be sorted, all four corners between the bumpers and the wings. Does anyone know of good bodyshops in the North East (Durham area), that won't take my eyes and still produce good quality. Thanks in anticipation.

No help to you, but when I was looking, I saw lots of cars with rust at the base of the front and rear screens at the corners, but none with rust between the bumper and the wing.

How long have you had your car?

Do you know the history?

Or maybe it just hasn't happened to me yet?

I had this (still have this) on mine.

Make sure you use new bolts and the spring nuts when you get the job done.

These are what caused the rust on mine, that and the years worth of shite being sprayed up.

Cost me £200 for two wing meets bumper bits and a dent in the wing to be fixed, to give you a guide.

Rob

I,ve had the car 18 months, bought from 911 Virgin. I have service history, loads of bills and MOT certs dating back to 1993, howver nothing before 1993. I know one of the rear wings had been damaged and repaired by an OPC. I didn't notice any rust when I bought the car, however that's not suprising as I was just wanting to get my bum in the driving seat. It has a few spots above the windscreen however nothing serious, but may be worth having a look at when I have it repaired.

Rob, thanks for the advise on the nuts and washers etc. I've had quotes of between £1 & £3k for having this work done, it,s now a question of "how far do I take this". One thing is certain, it needs doing before a couple of £960 front wings are needed. Thanks once again.

i have a spot at "5-o-clock" under the front nearside headlight which looks like a scabby stonechip, and another at the bottom right corner of the door opening on the near side which again looks like a stonechip gone bad.. not got around to sorting them yet, but was quoted £300 to fix both and respray the bonnet, sill covers and sharkfins at the sametime, so wont be long until I do get them done..

also i have a couple of really small bubbles on the back wings right above the rear light lenses.. not sure if this is a known place for s**te to catch or not.. can be seen in the photo below; hoping its nothing serious!

I've got these too but just on the original rear wing. The other wing is documented as being replaced a good few years ago and has no such issues.

My 1993 C2 has some of these symptoms. I recently removed the OSF wing to repair the door check strap mounting, and the front wing had been repaired below the headlamp. This was the case on both sides. All the captive screw clip were rotten and causing body rust. I have replaced them all.
I think the 964 is starting to show its age like the 3.2's have done, it seems to affect all cars except some Southern England cars - because it is noticeably drier there than in Norther England / Ireland where I live.

My 1991 rs is free from any corrosion, (but was in a collection for 5 years and Southern England after that) until I brought it to Ireland. It has no corrosion protection being a rsl.

I intend to wait for all the areas to emerge, then strip the car for a glass-out respray. It would be great if some-one did a "map" of the places the 964 corrodes so that they could be checked. My list is currently: Front Wings below Headlamps, Lower corners of roof pillars front and rear, front edge of rear arches just above sill-cover and shark fin meeting point, top edges of Rear Lamps, Front & Rear Bumper Cover to 4 Wings meeting point.

I replaced the suspension because it was dreadful to drive and basically rotten.

Engine Tin-wear & Exhaust are on the list.

I wish the flywheel would rust away - it would make it a bit lighter.

i don't seem to have any around either of the screen which seems to be a common place, and im hoping i can move and get a decent size garage to do some of this light restoration work before it catches me out.. its like a race at the moment between house move and car repair!..

I've heard that the kidney bowls are a real concern for cars of our age.

I'm thinking of organising a 'midlands 964 meet' in the near future which would be a good place to compare our rust spots [&:] (and nicer things about the 964 of course [:)]). Not that I would expect you to be able to make it, George.

Steve,
Probably difficult for me.
I have the sill covers off at present, - I would consider putting an inspection hole in the sill in the area behind the cover for the purpose of rust proofing. I need to study the sheet metal work in the kidney bowl area, but I think its all double skinned?

Steve, forgive my ignorance, but can you describe the exact location of the so called "kidney bowl". I think I may be frightened to look on mine, but might risk looking with one eye.[:-]
Where are you thinking of holding the Midlands 964 meet? We have some friends living in Coventry therefore, depending on location and timing, we may have a ride down from Durham and combine a visit with a meet. Thanks.

I only learned about it at a recent open night at Ninemeister from their bodywork meiester - Marc Clowes. I am not an expert so the best way I can describe is that it's the junction of the B pillar to the floor pan. Marc's advice to look after that area is to take off the Shark's fin and wheel arch liner, steam clean and spray with waxoyl. I guess just trying to inspect it would be difficult unless you know what you're looking for (I don't).

I've been gauging interest in a meet over on Rennlist. The venue is not confirmed yet but it will most likely be in the Nottingham/Leicester area on either Sunday 11th or Sunday 25th May. I'll post a dedicated topic on here in a week or so [;)]

i would like to come to that meeting if its on the 25th,would like to look at some other cars to see how bad/good ours is,learn more about the "kidney bowl"

OK guys I've made a note that there are two more votes for the 25th. In less than a week there are about 10 of us interested in a meet. Here's a link to the Rennlist thread where I started it.

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/showthread.php?t=420053

I will start a dedicated topic on this board (and 911UK) when the venue is confirmed (Rob Hounslow has kindly come up with a couple of suggestions that we'll be investigating). [:)]

I think I've got some metal worm there as well.

What I have noticed is when I took my front belts out the bolt holding the seatbelt reel on was badly corroded at the end. To the point when it had rusted so much that the bolt didn't want to come out.

I may (if I can be arsed) take the side sills and fin off to have a look at how bad it is...............and then put it back and leave it :)

Steve, thanks for the info on the "kidney bowl" area. I don't know whether to look or not. Next time it's in for service I might ask the question. Reference to the possible meet. Either date would suit me therefore I'll watch for future posts.

I thought that "kidney bowl" corrosion was a pre-galvanised body problem and that the plastic trimmed sillsof the 964 avoided this.[8|]
