Sooty exhaust

Yes, both my 987 and 981 have had sooty exhausts, as have friends 997 and 996. Important to check no smoke on startup and oil consumption is not excessive, but a sooty exhaust is nothing to be concerned about by itself.

From brand new, the exhaust tips on my 981 Boxster S quickly get covered in soot, so I'm guessing it's just a normal thing. Some stainless steel polish restores them back to shiny life again, although I find more and more stubbornly black bits as time goes on. Thinking of ticking the option for black exhaust tips next time round, because replacements are outrageously priced.

Spend an afternoon on the track hammering the high revs and you'll soon burn all the soot off, leaving some lovely looking heat stains. Personally I like the "well ragged" look :)

In all seriousness, having got back from a fun day at Brands Hatch yesterday it never ceases to amaze me how much better the engine breathes and sounds after some time on track. City driving is just cruel to these cars.
