SORN

Just wanted to canvass views and any experience with SORN for the winter months. To be honest I will not use my Turbo S between November and late March so I am considering posting a SORN. The car will be covered and charged by a Porsche trickle charger and locked in a secure alarmed garage. I am insured through Aviva and when I spoke to Marsh at renewal time they advised that a policy cannot be suspended and has to be cancelled. There is no issue with accident or theft, which leaves fire. This would be covered on my house insurance, which I have checked.
So, please comment on experience and offer thoughts! I don't need to be told "keep it on the road and use it" - I simply don't use it and stick with my trusty Cayenne, which will have winter tyres when I get round to switching shortly.

I put my car on SORN last winter and Manning put my insurance policy on an "off road” basis. I received a refund for that period when I reverted to road use and re-taxed the car in the Spring.

SORN is fine so far as road tax is concerned, but personally for peace of mind I would not suspend or put insurance on hold. House insurance may well cover the car in the event of fire - but would they pay just a trade price rather than replacement cost or agreed value? And what about the matter of theft (however unlikely) is it worth risking not being covered?

Work out the amount of the Marsh premium you will save over the winter and I suspect it will negligible against the value of the piece of kit you'll be protecting.

I once had something fall from a loft area of a locked garage and go straight through the roof of the car - so you never know what's around that corner!

If it's any help, I produced a list for 997 Register of items to look at when laying up for winter, which you can find here https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=943256#943256
Regards,

Clive
