Sort out my 951 please

So here is the problem. I have a very solid 951 except the turbo isn't boosting so here I am about to to remove large chunks of ancillaries I am prepared to replace anything that needs replacing but me thinks now is a good time to improve what porsche made 30 years ago so what I want is the best way to Improve what I have. I'm not looking for big numbers, I just want what I've got to work the best it can within a sensible budget. There is so much on the net about our cars that's its mind blowing. I just want good advise from those who know. Sensible people step forward please. [:)][:)][:)]
 
There are guys on here with some very special modifications and expensive kit.

However, from my more limited experience, I found the so called Promax stage 2 kit a really good high value, low-ish value bit of kit. Obviously look at LR too and compare prices. However, you should really be modifying a 'fit' car so you really need to establish where you are at in terms of your current problems. Otherwise, there may be little benefit plus you could do some damage.

If you haven't changed your head gasket yet...... Be aware!

As a first step which will be a noticeable improvement for very little work, I'd recommend you go for a Dual Port Wastegate with manual boost control, adjustable FPR or a 3 bar non adjustable upgrade and a set of chips to get the best from these mods. These alone will give a 220 model around 50 extra horses, if you have the car properly mapped instead of buying off the shelf chips you'll see over 280 bhp. My own car with these mods made 282 bhp when set up by Wayne Scofield back in the late 90's and this wasn't the max that the car had to offer at the time, just me playing safe asking Wayne to keep the power increase at moderate levels. I know the ability of these engines a lot more now than back then...:) you may find it worthwhile replacing your recirculating valve around the same time, if this is not in top form ( if original it won't be) you'll soon find issues with holding boost. I found my car would some times go to safety mode when using max power until I put a bailey motorsport BOV in place of the standard recirculating valve, never had the overboost come to play since that small change, although this was changed to a 'dump to atmosphere' type many years ago.
Of course once you start down this road there's no turning back, you'll want more and more... have fun..:)

+1 for Promax Level 2 stuff. I picked up what I needed over time and didn't pay that much for any of it. DPW, manual boost controller, 3 bar fpr, chips and a re-circ valve. I would also get a decent boost gauge and an AFR gauge while you're at it so you can keep an eye on fuelling and boost levels.

As Steve says you must resolve your current issue first. If the wastegate is coming off you may as well stick on a dual port one when refitting!

This is the classic dilema and one I found myself in. No point replacing the inferior wastegate with another inferior Porsche wastegate. For the same money or less you can upgrade to a DPW. Tial or Lynsey either are as good. As you are doing this then you may as well get the chips to match and take advantage of the extra horsepower gain. Before you know it you will be changing the dump valve getting 55lb injectors, chips and a race fule pump to feed it all. Be very careful which way you go as the extra HP is very, very addictive and you soon become accustom to it. Good point about th HG if you do decide to boost the wind. Extar wind and heat may just push an ageing HG over the edge.
 
Agree on the HG. If you have no record of it being done in last 10 years its a must when upping the boost. I killed my ageing HG by doing exactly this. They rot unfortunately and the extra boost will help them to their final resting place!

This was mine, somehow my turbo let go at the same time! [&:]

However I now have a nicely rebuilt engine and turbo. Better safe than sorry with the HG!

I think I've opened up a can of worms for myself, getting the wastegate off is just going to be the first part of digging deeper as I checked back the cars history and it shows the last time the HG was replaced was 40,000 miles ago in 2000, [:'(] So everything off including head then look at best options for me (try and keep the cost to a manageable level) when putting back together, its going to be a saga I'm sure. Thanks for suggestions I'll take them all onboard. First thing new though will be the wastegate.[;)] as and when I get the ruddy thing off[:'(].
 
Waste gate I would get an exhaust shop make fit tial f38 or 44mm one which will just require a flange wielded on.

How long do u intend to keep the car? Get it running and in use then start to keep an eye out for used bits will make it cheaper, however doing a lot in one go will also.

Am I right in thinking that you suspect the wastgate is your problem? If I remember correctly (somebody confirm either way please) you can shim the wastegate in situ, the shim is only around £13 (from promax I think) It might be the cheapest and least hassle way of finding out if it is at fault. When I took mine off three bolts sheared off.

So I bench tested and the valve opened...bug*er. It's a a good job I plan to replace it with a Tial.[:)]
Onward and upward all the top stuff to come off now, inc. the head and turbo. Need to check out the chips as the previous owner said they are upgraded but I don't know with what. That's next weekend's job.[:)]
