Sound Pack Help

The right channel of the audio system in my 04MY (53 reg) Boxster has developed a problem. There is no audible mid range or high range output from the RH dash speaker. The speaker works as proven by swapping with the LH unit and it as producing low range sound, suggesting the mid- and high- range signal is missing which suggests the fault is with the amplifier. Therefore I have to try to establish if it is the head unit or indeed the amplifier mounted in the front boot. Is there anyone in the Surrey/Hampshire/Berkshire area, or even further afield, with an 04 MY or possibly an 03MY Boxster with this factory fitted amplifier which uses the MOST data bus who would allow me to try my amp in their car please?

If anyone is able to help perhaps they could PM me? Thanks.

In case anyone wonders - Guildford OPC can't do this diagnostic exercise. They confirmed only what I was able to establish myself.

Have you put a multimeter to the wiring to ensure its not a simple cabling fault? I imagine you could also meter whether or not the amp is putting out anything on that channel.

Also, I'm not 100% on this but I think you can't just swap in MOST devices, the car has to be "mated" to them, which might required dealer assistance, so if you do a swap and iget nothing that might be the cause.

Unfortunately, I don't have a multimeter - not sure I'd know what I was doing anyway!

I was advised that it is only the head unit which is mated to the car, not the amp.

Decided to find out how much a replacement amp is. I got 2 quotes:

OPC Guildford part no. 996.645.333.03 £222.58 inc. VAT
OPC Reading part no. 996.645.332.05 £511.94 exc. VAT

After the first I was thinking, might be worth a gamble, being less than 2 hrs diagnostic at an OPC. But then, hang on, how come the part number is different and there's about £380 difference in the price? According to OPC Reading: "You've been quoted for a LHD one, Sir." "A LHD amplifier?" "Yes." "Oh."

So I took the current amp out, thinking it might have a part number on it. It did : 996.645.331.03. A different number again. Anyway its a Becker 6600 DSP-Amplifier in case you're interested. So whilst its off, I took it apart, or at least removed the cover - but nothing obvious loose or burnt out inside. Re-assembled it, refitted and now it works!

So now wondering for how long it will work. And also wondering what the quote will be for the part actually fitted.
