Sound proofing

We've recently bought a '69 912 and, after a bit of welding (including replacing both panels in front of the fuel tank), we're moving on to the interior. It came with new door pockets and very good seat upholstery, but much of the rest of the vinyl is in poor condition. We've bought some leatherette to re-cover the parcel shelf, but we thought this might be a good time to put in some soundproofing here and behind the rear seats. Has anybody done this to their car? What materials did you use and what was the effect? We want to preserve the aeroplane noise when accelerating, but be able to hear the sterio when cruising! Also has anyone tried covering a dashboard?

Firstly welcome,
Soundproofing: Many people use Dynamat which you can get from Halfords, I haven't as I like to hear the engine and gave up long ago trying to listen to any music, as the best music is the flat four!
Dash tops: Bit of a difficult one to recover, don't know anyone who has, try Southbound for some ideas. (see links page 912 regsiter site)

Cheers
Gavin

Thanks for the reply. I found a supplier of all sorts of sound proofing materials: www.noisestopsystems.co.uk . They recommended bitumen based self adhesive sheets. I think these might well be a good replacement for the sound proofing that's already there because they won't absorb water.

As it turns out we may leave the sound proofing until later because we've found a couple of spots of rust we hadn't seen, so the money is going into a compressor, shot blaster, and spray gun!

A couple more questions:

Are LHD and RHD wooden footwell boards interchangeable?

What engine and gear box oil would people recommend?

you can do the dash tops I have done one but it was a early model where the dash is able to be trimmed in two bits. The 69 model is more difficult as it is moulded as one. There are covers available in the US dash tops that cover over the top of your dash but they are ££$$ have a look at Stoddards or Performance products etc or Pelican Parts

For a stock engine the oil of choice seems to be Castrol GTX 10-40 a NON synthetic oil.
For gearboxes the oil of choice seems to be Swepco 201 available from some of the Porsche specialists like Transend and Beryln Services. Again see links page of our register site.

Footwell boards: Possible that the passenger one is, doubtful that the drivers one would be, but no car to check for sure and I can't remember from memory or lack of it, sorry bit senile!

foot boards either right or left hand are available through DDK online shop at very reasonable cost.

soundproofing why i like the sound of the engine and it warms me up in the winter[8D]

I agree as they have a curve at the top so they are NOT changeable..

as the curve would be the wrong way round.

Shot gun what do you want that for ??

DIY spray see my bit on this on the DDK site I have both compressor and a HVLP unit from B&Q for prep work

I need to blast off the old paint and rust before applying a galvanising spray, primer, filler, etc.

I've been checking out compressors on eBay and they seem to be quite reasonable.

I can't find anything on DDK - it's not the easiest site to navigate. Do you have the URL of your article?

Thanks Alex

better than that here's my site..

http://www.classic356.co.uk/part3.htm

now not knowing how good you are at paint etc. What's with this Galvanising paint?? and blasting the old paint off. hmmm read my site abit and then we can talk. I have done 3 full cars and loads of other repairs. The etch primer is the best as it is an acid that etches into the metal and it is also a filler primer. and a good base for 2pk paints..

and here for good measure the DDK link
