source for tires

well, my decision on what tires to get has been hurried up by finding my car sitting on a flat front tire the other day. Fortunately the spare had air in it. Since the car came on a mismatched set of tires (2 front tires are a brand i've never heard of, 1 Kumho & 1 yet another brand i've never heard of on the rear) I've been wanting to remedy that, but couldn't decide whether to stick with the 15s or go for something larger. I now need to get on with it.

I'm beginning to wonder if tire shops want to sell me anything! I've phoned around several places and without fail they emphatically deny the existence of such a thing as a 215/60 R15 tire! Claiming such a thing doesn't exist in spite of me looking at a web-site listing around a dozen options. As soon as they heard the word Porsche they also immediately dismissed Falken, in spite of being keen on them on their respective web-sites. hmmm...

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good reasonably priced tire place in or near Reading? If not then i guess it will be Kwik-Fit and Goodyear NCTs. Oddly enough their price for NCTs was ~20GBP less than blackcircles.com. If i could find somewhere with Kumho or Falken it would be ideal.

Going to be an expensive car month, I've got it booked into RPM Technik for belts, oil seals, water pump and steering U-joint in a couple of weeks.

I went through Blackcircles, and their fitters in Chesham. Couldn't be happier.

I wouldn't let a chain of untrained staff like Kwik-Fit near my old van, let alone my Porsche. Over my six years with the cars I've heard too many tales of floors being flattened with club hammers after poor jacking, and the gearbox being used as a jacking point.

My Falkens are fine, but that's in a 16". Aside from P6000s, which are only good from an economy point-of-view, or cheap "unbranded" rubbish, you should be fine.

I'd go back to Blackcircles and ask if they will match the price. Even if they won't, for £20 it's really not worth going to a "knock-'em-out-cheap" place.

i've just placed an order with blackcircles and I've decided to go with the Falkens. So Saturday morning I should finally have a matching set of tires, which should improve things a bit. Certainly my daily commute down twisty country lanes will be more comfortable than todays with 4 different brands of tire, one of which is a skinny high profile spare!

Online tyre places are, in my experience, much cheaper than any high-street affair. Blackcircles were the last lot I used and they were very competitive.

BUT they use local fitters (you choose one of the places local to you whom they have an agreement with), and Blackcircles deliver the tyre there and they fit them for you. So your experience will only be as good or bad as the local fitters. I chose my nearest fitter, who turned out to be a total CUNextTuesday. Asked me to sign to say I was happy with the work before they had even bought the car into the fitting bay (I refused), jacked it wrongly (missed the jacking point) and wouldn't allow me to supervise the work. They did hand-torque the nuts, with a torque-wrench, but only after I asked them twice to do so.

Go with blackcircles. But choose your local fitters with care.

(I made a formal complaint about the fitters in question to BC. They simply don't deserve to be in business.)

Tyranus
You're having a turkish? Someone actually called a tyre shop Tyranus? [:D]

I've always been a fan of mytyres.co.uk and have always been impressed with their prices and delivery - until today!!

I just happened to be on the lookout for some winter tyres for my daily driver Golf and mytyres.co.uk were quoting £125 each for the Vredestein SnowTrac. A bit of Googling later I found a Dutch company running a UK web site called Pneus Online (web site here) offering exactly the same tyres at a tad over £85 each!!! AND that included VAT and delivery.

They seem to have some pretty good prices on Falkens and a massive range of other manufacturers as well. Worth a look.

Dave

Online tyre sites I have used, or know people who have used them

Camskill - cheap but will need local fitting
Tyretraders. com - allows you to choose a local fitter and free delivery
Mytyres.com as above
Black circles as above

Until recently i would have recommended Tyretraders as they were allways significantly cheaper and I have personnal experience of them , however Black Circles now look to be getting more competitive.

I wouldn't touch Kwk Fit/ATS or any other national even if they paid me.

oh, that's a bit annoying! I should have waited, but I've booked an installation in Reading, but hadn't thought to check Hurst. My office is just outside Hurst so could have dropped the car off, then walked the 5 minutes to the office.

I am near Reading mate, I just used black circles too for 2 fronts for my wifes Honda FRV (2 x Hankook Ventus - £134 fitted, balanced, vat and tyre disposal) I used a local fitter in Hurst who were very good, even hand torques the wheel nuts, something that would never happen at Quik fit (how are they still in business??) I would never go to ANY large chain of tyre fitters. For me the small independants are always better. Fo future use, Bracknell tyres are cheap but rough, and Tyranus in Woodley are good too.
