SPA 1000KM PORSCHE 956

NB
'The onboard isn't from Bellof's car, it's from the #1 Ickx/Mass works Porsche, that was the car carrying the onboard camera at Spa in '85 (which is what this race looks to be). Bellof's car is the one ahead and to the right on the way into La Source at the start of the clip.'

So who is driving the leading car in the last few minutes of the clip ? It seemed to have good pace especially on the Kemmel.

The chicane ( now replaced ) looked a bit involving.....good brake test zone. [;)]

Enjoyed seeing how much of the circuit has changed versus what is the same. Very first time I went to Spa was the last year of the old bus stop. Blanchimont 2 so much tighter and all the furniture A LOT closer in those days!

Thanks for posting Melv.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Great footage. Can't believe how close the armco is and the total lack of gravel traps anywhere ! Just grass at Rivage , pouhon and stavelot ! Shows how far track safety has moved on. What is now the F1 pits is not there either !

Laurence, I assume you know the Frankenheimer movie "Grand Prix" - Spa in 1966 is even harder to believe from today´s point of view. I think, in 1971 the average lap speed of a 917 on that track was 260 km/h!

Yeah driving down some of those old sections of public road at normal road speeds just makes it feel utterly insane the race speeds they took down there.

Thanks for sharing the vid.

"According to John Horseman's excellent book "Racing in the Rain" the 917s were in top gear, 4th, for up to 87% of each lap with a maximum speed of 218mph being achieved approaching the Masta Kink. Finally, the 1000 Kilometres were completed in a minute over the 4-Hour mark, incredible."

962 camera car was being driven by Jochen Mass, leading Lancia was crewed by Patrese/Baldi/Wollek, not sure who started thar car though
