Space saver

Hi all

I don't really have much faith in Porsche's can of Nicky Clarke hair mousse in case of puncture, so am trying to locate a space saver wheel suitable for 19" wheels.

Has anyone else thought along the same lines and sourced one?

If so, a name and rough cost would be appreciated.

I have tried a few breakers and local tyre company but no joy.

You'd think Porsche would at least offer it as an option![]

Any feedback gratefully received[:)]
Cheers
Rob

I have already purchased a space saver spare and jack for the same reason. The inflatable 16" type will fit a 997 with no problems, for 997S with bigger brakes a 7mm spacer is required to clear the front caliper. The wheel will stow in the front compartment OK. Obviously the removed punctured wheel would have to go behind the front seats when the need arises. Another reason for going this route is that with the foam or space saver you are restricted to 50mph. Imagine driving along a motorway with your foam repaired tyre doing 50mph, I can just imagine other drivers comments, "look at that w****r in the Porsche crawling along!" At least with the space saver it is obvious to all why the sedate speed.
I sourced the wheel and spacer from Jasmine, the jack (996 4S) from PorscheApart.

Additionally, if you get a minor puncture and foam fill the tyre, you have to write the tyre off. Without foam a reputable tyre fitter can repair a small puncture - even on a Z rated tyre and it's completely legal. You may have an opinion as to whether you want to do that, but the option is yours.

Re writing off a foam filled tyre with a small repairable puncture, would the AA provide a spare wheel to get you home?

Hi - I did not think it was legal to repair a Z rated tyre?

small plug repairs away form the sidewalls are perfectly safe, better if sent away for vulcanisation. Anything within an inch of the tyre shoulder shouldn't be repaired

You may well be right, it's not something I know a large amount about, but I'm sure I read recently that BSI Standard BSAU159f did not permit the repair of Z rated tyres - I'm just trying to find the web page I read it on

Thanks for the feedback -

I've still not had a reply from Douglas Valley, so I'll try Jasmine or Porscheapart.
I'll feel much better knowing that I've a proper spare (and yes, I wouldn't be too keen to throw away a perfectly good tyre for the sake of a nail).

Bin bag stowed in fron bulkhead cubby in boot along with vinyl gloves would act as full size wheel stow bag/change kit, and the full size should sit nicely on the flat platform with rear seats folded (or in boot if not full of luggage).

Thanks everyone!

I remember reading something on those lines too but I think it only applied to Z-rated tyres for motorbikes(?)
