Gents can I request input to the question of running or not running wheel spacers. I'm not running any at the moment and am interested to know what the benefits of running them are and if so what size/spec front and rear?

When I say benefit am I asking whether widening the track (if that IS what I'm doing by fixing these tings) improves grip or handling.....or does it just fill out the arches....and if I'm doing mostly track days and the Speed Challenge how are they going to help hinder in those scenarios?

 
Have 20mm spacers on the rear of the Cup Car, but only, it seems, to get over the extraordinarily long studs fitted to the car. The slicks at the rear only just clear the wheel arch lip.

Wider track, should, in theory, improve the handling.

Wider track would have the effect of slightly lowering the Centre of Gravity, which should help improve handling. So a wide body RSR for example will have a lower CoG than a narrow body car.

I would guess that the gain to be had from a narrow body car is going to be marginal, because of the small amout of increase available. So long as the geometry is setup with the spacers on it shouldn't hinder.
 
As luck would have it, I am just about to ebay some front and rear Techart spacers suitable for 964/993. If you get in quick with an offer I won't sell them to the great unwashed - should you want them, of course [:)]

New they cost 80 GBP or so each for the fronts and 120 GBP or so each for the rears.

Hi Jimbers. Cheers. I have put them on ebay already but will remove them for you if need be, favour of the badger bethren. PS I am not sure whether they are 80/120 GBP each or a set. I am not sure how even Techart could charge more than 40 quid for a bit of ali (nice ali!) with holes in it.

I suppose you could add the 10mm fronts to the 20mm rears - NOT!!! [;)]

If Jim doesn't want them, the ebay bidding is going nicely, so the badgers won't go hungry at xmas.
 
While I obviously want spacers because I am a new owner and want to spend money on my loved one[:D], what is the real reason I should want them? And is size important [;)]? Seriously though, why are spacers used, what is the best size, does it mess up the geometry that has been so expensively set up and any other info would be greatly received.
 
My car was supplied brand new with the factory spacers, set up of the car is bang on, just been done by Parr sits nicely and very well balanced pity I can't do it justice, in the hands of a pro-Driver absolutely awesome..memories of Spa spanking the entire ensemble........[:)]
 
Hi Simon -howz the old banger going?

Spacers -visually help the tyres fill the wheel arches, in practice widen the track and lower the roll centre, so you can go around corners quicker!! [:D]

Don't go to wide or the tyre will foul the wheek arch.

The old banger continues to bring a smile to my face just thinking about it. Taking it for a drive is almost as good as..........can't remember but I know there is meant to be something better than this (don't let my wife have access to this) [:D]

I can understand the wider track and filling the wheel arches looks good, but I fail to see how moving the wheels sideways lowers the roll centre. Anyway, that sounds far too technical. It is clear that I need some just so I can say, very knowingly, "of course, I have fitteed XXmm spacers and its made all the difference!"

Now all I need to know is when you say don't go too wide, what is the recommended spacer for an otherwise standard suspension car.

It's all to do with roll centres, old boy. :)
