Hi

Having only one key for the car when I bought it, i would like to get a spare. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? I have seen a few on Ebay and they say they are for the 996, would this fit? Ideally I would like a remote key, but not too picky

Thanks

Keys have to be matched to the car, there are 3 codes, two for the car and one that comes with a new key.

ebay ones are typically code-less ie second hand and unless you're needing the key-fob parts are useless.

You don't necessarily need to go to a main dealer but they will need the Porsche computer that plugs into the car.

Had same problem picked up a car with only a single key. Popped into Porsche Sheffield [much to the delight of their technicians they adore anything air-cooled] and they sorted one out for me with 4 days.
They took vehicle details and extracted the necessary original data from their workshop Porsche data system. I did think afterwards what if the locks had been changed etc thankfully not a problem for me but something to be aware of.

It is possible for an advanced Auto Locksmith to make keys for you. What area are you in and I will give you contact details of someone capable in that area.

PS: Don't buy keys off ebay. They will invariably be wrong type for some reason or u/s. Also a lot of newer keys are one time use only, so once they are programmed to a car they are locked and uniquely passworded and cannot be programmed to another car

Thanks Andy.
I am in the Portsmouth Area.
I found an old link off a forum to an auto locksmith who can supply one, but does it still need programming?
Thanks again

Yes, there is a transponder in the key that needs pairing to the car or it will not start. Also the remote will need pairing.

Curiously, I got two keys with my (2001) Boxter when I bought it a year ago but only one works remotely. Tried changing the battery in the 2nd to no avail. I can only imagine that either the electronics in the key have died or it has 'un-propgrammed' itself somehow....

I contacted an OPC and they want in excess of £200 (can't remember the exact figure) for a replacement to match the one that works.

I would also be grateful to hear of any expert locksmiths who might be able to help (a little cheaper!).

Hope to bump (not literally!) in to y'all at Silverstone and/or LeMans for the WEC.

Best wishes
