spare relays

Hi to you all from a new 3.2 owner.
A quick question just to avoid any confusion regarding 'relays'. In an article in the May 911 & Porsche World magazine, it advises to keep a spare relay for the fuel system handy i.e purchase and fit a new one and keep the old one in the glove box. Having browsed several parts sites, an 'orange coloured' fuel relay is shown, together with a 'black coloured' DME relay [also with a lot more pins]. Which is the one, if one is needed and what exactly is the difference? I appreciate that I may be asking the obvious to those of you with a lot more experience, but please spare a bit of advice for a newcomer.

Many thanks.

Mark

It is the DME relay that is the one that normally fails. I have had to replace mine since getting the car about a year ago. The DME relay controls power to the fuel pump. This allows the engine control system to cut fuel to the engine if you over rev. The DME relay is sited under the passengar seat (in a RHD car) and can be fitted without removing the seat.

Hi Mark,
Ditto the above, I purchased a spare DME that I keep in my glove box, I left the old one in situ as it's still working fine, if it ever fails then I'll just switch them over but no need to do it striaght away as you have suggested

Most of the porsche parts specialists supply them: - Porsheshop, Design911, Type 911, etc cost about £29.99 plus VAT & delivery.

If you are going to carry any spares then this must be on the list, only a few months ago on a Saturday in the shopping area car park just off the A10 came across a fellow owner totally stranded, on the Monday I ordered mine [8D]

Odd seeking someone with your own name on the forum!
