spare wheel

hi everybody, we are going for our 1st trip with the car with my 6 years old son and I am thinking about that spare wheel .If I have a puncture and I use my spare wheel were would I put the flat one nowing on top that it is a 265 by 30 rear 225 by 40 front.so I am thinking getting a repair kit and take advantage of the extra space. as anyone have any experience many thanks Konstantin
 
Spares add to the crash protection at the front by diverting a front impact around the tank to a certain extent.
There's a thread on rennlist at the minute about this.
Storage for the damaged wheel is simply as well as you can wedge in the boot.
I wouldn't like to depend on a can of foam to fix at the roadside.
 
I have thought about using tyre guard or a similar product which is put into the tyre and instantly seals any punctures as they happen. Anyone used these products and if so do they work ?
 
Hi there, yes those foam things do work by all accounts, the problem is that once used you tyre is totally fllcked!! better to keep the spare one if you can. Another, not so good idea but can be useful, Is when you buy a set of 2 new tyres or if you get one split etc, is to keep a spare one in your garage, that way if you need a tyre in a hurry at least you have one, especially usefull if most of your journeys are local to home. Your breakdown assistance will be able to take you home etc. One of the biggest disasters is to have a knackered tyre on a weekend (or thurs Fri potentially when tyre suppliers cannot obtain one for you) at least if you have a spare one, you can restart!! good luck Chris
 
my mum recently had this exact problem.. she has a smart car that comes with a little 12v compressor and a can of repair foam. She came out of work a couple of weeks ago, and had a puncture (nail in the tyre) so filled it with foam, pumped up with compressor, drove home slowly and then called the wheelrights in the village the following morning to get a new tyre..

Their first reaction was that the tyre could have been repaired, but the foam completely writes off the tyre, so new tyre, plus about 1/2hr cleaning the rim before fitting the new tyre.. repair would have been about 15 quid (tyre was about 5k miles old and my mums a steady driver) new tyre 75..

I would stick with a space saver spare over a can of that foam every time, especially with larger/expensive tyres..

PS.. EVO magazine had a similar issue with a new GT3 on test not long ago.. took about 4 days to get a replacement because it was bespoke to the GT3, and they couldnt use the foam as they split the side-wall of the tyre..
 
My wife used to have a Smart and we were told not to use the spare by the garage.
Last year I also kerbed a wheel in the 964 and was going to change it for the space saver when the relay man finally turned up. He told me only to blow up the tyre if I never wanted to fit it back into the car. Thankfully, the 12V blow up had just started, so the tyre was readily deflated and still fitted in again.
I now have a spare rear wheel with a tyre fitted on it. Now I just need a spare front wheel and tyre.

Lets all try to avoid punctures.
